How To Update Motherboard BIOS on BFG Tech 680i SLi?

I'm trying to update the BIOS on my 680i SLi. However, it is proving to be troublesome...

I installed nVidia System Update but the options do not appear within nVidia Control Panel. Apparently this is an issue with Vista 64.

I installed nTune but there is no option to update the motherboard.

I burned a CD with the files on it. The Flash programme will launch but the keyboard will not respond so the "flash" command cannot be entered.

I put the files on a USB flash drive. It doesn't appear it will work that way either. Nothing is recognised for that in BOOT up.

I don't have a floppy disk drive so that rules that option out (really don't want to buy one if I can help it).

Can someone help me please?

What sort of keyboard are you using ?
If its a USB keyboard then ensure that enable USB keyboard is enabled in the bios if you have already done this then try using a PS2 keyboard ( if you dont have one get a cheep one from some where ( sorry mods I would say from here but you can get them for a few pounds from a local pc shop saves on postage :o),
If its a PS2 keyboard your already using something is seriously wrong:eek:

I take it you mean in relation to when I was using the CD, right?

I have tried both a Saitek Eclipse (USB - enabled in BIOS) as well as a cheap old Logitech PS/2.

Ok this is going to be intresting then and I so do like a challange:p

Here is the idea i have seeing as the mobo has the ability to boot from USB !

Check this site out to make your USB stick DOS bootable

Dos Boot Usb

Make your USB bootable following the above site info :) Bung the flash utility and new bios onto the flashdrive.
Now to stop and problems with having 2 bootable systems in your PC powerdown and unplug the drive windows is installed on from your MoBo power up and ensure boot from USB is active in your bios save changes and reboot.

You should now boot into DOS from your usb drive and have keyboard access and thus be able to flash your bios with no problems.

Just found this which should make things easier for you.

HP USB boot utility

Just asking one thing if it does work let me know lol:D

Thanks for the help damfoose. :)

I will try what you suggested tomorrow and report back.

There isn't actually an option to enable boot from USB in the BIOS though. There is boot from "external" and "other device" though, as well as from CD, Floppy and Hard Disk.

Was about to try this before I realised what it was. My USB drive is bootable. I found it in the BIOS too, it's described as a hard drive though for some reason.

It still won't boot though. I read at another forum that this motherboard cannot be flashed with USB drives - only floppy. :(

EDIT - I tried what you said about removing the hard drive with Windows on btw. It didn't make a difference. :(

I'm wondering if I could use a different utility to flash it with other than the one provided with the BIOS update.

EDIT 2 - Something I forgot - my USB drive isn't formatted yet - that would probably help! lol Will try that method you mentioned after all Damfoose. ;)

Well that sucks. :(

A high tech motherboard that relies on old tech floppies...

Guess I will have to order myself a new drive after all then.

Thanks for that info.

The BFG 680i (as in sig) Bios can only be updated via floppy drive,

USB flash will not work, nor any other flash utility.

I'm sure it can because I updated mine using a USB drive before installing vista?

Had to format my key etc on XP though using the HP tool thingy. Can't quite remember the procedur though I'm afraid, I need to update my BIOS anyway if I get it to work I'll post how I did it =)

LoL, it' all very confusing. :S

I've downloaded that HP tool and formatted my key. But the DOS bootable files I have don't appear on my drive after I've formatted it. I got these from http://www.gamebeat.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1057

I noticed that one of the guys who posted had the same issue...

Can someone link me to DOS bootable files which will work?

Or tell me how to make my own?

You can update via USB. Its how I always updated mine. You just need to set the usb stick as the boot drive in the boot options. You can also update the bios via CD.

Neither work for me. :(

How did you make your USB drive work? Or the CD for that matter? I've set both drives to BOOT but it still doesn't work.

I just burn the .bin file to a CD and press alt f2 repeatedly until the flash thing appears.

I have the same problem as the guy at slizone the previous poster linked to. The AwardFlash screen pops up but is completely unresponsive.

Unfortunately that nVidia software doesn't work in Vista 64 so that rules it out for me. :(

Ah that's a shame it worked for me on Vista Ultimate64 but then again it's probably running it at 32bit =(

Sorry mate, it's a pain in the ass doing BIOS updates on the 680's without a FDD.

for boot disks try here http://www.bootdisk.com
Also noticed that it has a driver free boot disk for bios flashing may be usefull.

Other than that im unsure what else I can do to help as i dont have the same hardware as you so I cant test myself :(
