I read that the firmware of the drive is supposed to update automatically when signed into Xbox Live and watching a HD-DVD...

But mine doesn't update when doing this.

I could already have the latest firmware but 'Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire' doesn't play.

Anyway I can manually update the firmware? I've tried to find a place to download it but haven't managed to. I have the drive installed on my PC already, which might make things easier...

There's something wrong with the download/their instructions.

The file isn't the size they say it is and there isn't a file called "default.xex".

There is one file in the $systemupdate folder called "su20076000_00000000".

I tried renaming that to "default.xex" and burning that (inside the "$systemupdate" folder) onto a disc. But the disc is unreadable to the Xbox.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is the firmware held on the HDDVD drive itself?

If so then would it update when you plug it into a PC?

I only ask as i know it goes through an installation when you first plug it in - in fact windows update itself might allow for the firmware fix. Might be worth a try! :)

When I've downloaded some items from our work sub, some of the filenames have been wrong .exe became .ex, .iso became .is etc etc.

Might be worth renaming it to .exe and try and run it? :)

Just downloaded it myself, and the fact the file says 'Fall07' makes me wonder if it's actually redirecting to the dashboard update from last year, rather than a HD-DVD update

Personally I'd try to find out what firmware version you already have (Google it - you can find out via one of the menus using the remote I think) then compare it to what the current version should be.

It is held on the actual drive AFAIK, yes.

I don't think Windows can automatically update its firmware though. At least, it only offered me the chance to install its PC drivers.

Also, I have tried the HD-DVD in question since then and it still won't play. :(

It had crossed my mind also. But I do believe that xex is the correct filename, having found a page relating to that file type and the 360 in Wikipedia.

I think you may be right about that. It would certainly explain why the files are different to how they describe it.

Will try to find my firmware version and compare as you say. I was trying to do this via PC but couldn't work out how to.

Thanks Nismo - I managed to find my firmware version within the "Help" section of the control pad menu system.

I indeed have the latest version.

Which means my fears that the disc was delivered DoA are true. Unfortunately I purchased it too long ago to claim on it and get a replacement. Will have to stump up the cash and get a replacement. I think it's only £3.99 but I don't like repurchasing items I already own! :p

Anyway, case solved - thanks to all for for assistance! ;)
