Hi guys,

I am going to be installing two double socket face plates in my house in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering if someone knew of a dummies guide to wiring up the sockets. I have the punch down tool to do it, just to know what to stick where.

Thanks. Stuart

Nice one thats great.

Looking at it, it looks like how you wire up a UTP cable (i.e. Terminal 1 is the same as pin 1 on the RJ45 plug).

Was papping myself thinking it would be difficult.

One point though - if I wire it up and punch it down and test it and it fails - can I just pull the wires out connectors on the faceplate? Or is it a case of once youve punched it you can't repunch?

Ta

You can usually get away re-punching it. You should be leaving enough slack to do this. At least a foot I would say

Yeah, plenty of slack always. But if not, just pull the wires out and punch them in again, but firmer.

Yeah you can just pull the wires out, give it a good tug. :)

Then you'll want to cut that bit off and punch down again.

It's not usualy quite the same as an RJ45 plug, but every cat 5 face plate I've istalled has a legend on the inside telling where eveything goes.

There are two standards for wiring cat 5, EIA 568-B and EIA 568-A. Use the same standard for both ends (B is normal) is you want a straight wired cable. If you want cross wired use a different one at each end.

Generaly you use straight wired unless you are connecting to PCs dirrectly to each other or you're connecting your PC to a router with only one network port.

More info here.

What I did for a mate was leave extra slack, but also, if you've got the room, put in an extra redundant wire and electrical tape the ends shut. Because, if something goes wrong with the exisiting wire (and they sometimes do) then the other redundant wire is already there! Wire that up and hey! Network's up again! :)
