hi all i have been looking at gpu coolers most of which dont plug straight into the gpu board where the stock fan was! is there a reason why they dont do this and could i solder the plug off the stock fan onto the new vga cooler fan and plug it in so that the fan speed can be controlled with fan and temp software like rivatuner?

The most common reasons for this are likely to be so that a) they don't have to provide specific coolers for specific cards in case the connectors are not the same and b) maybe the add on cooler draws more power then the onboard connector could cope with.

the cooler im using is a zalman vf1000 and putting it on an 8800gt! if anyone knows if this is possible i'd very gratefull for any info! i know the zalman comes with a fanmate speed controller but it would be easier to control if it was wired to the gpu header!
