how to wire up cat5?

I don't think it would make much difference. You can attach directly to the back of the adsl nation faceplate onto the punchdowns as well if you want enabling you to route the cat5e cable wherever you want.

I've already got faceplates installed with cat5e and currently using them. Just want to move my router to the master socket to see if I get any increase in speed as the socket is currently wired through a couple of extensions.

Wont make any discernible difference to be honest, not over such a short distance anyway. I have used RJ11 "telephone style" cables, CAT5e full 4 pair and single pair and it made not a decimal point of difference to any stat.

Thanks for that. I'll just stick to the normal cable then.

Took me a while to find the correct one. Which leads me to a question.

When professional people route lots of cables. How do they know which is which. Or do they just wait until they have plugs on the end and then check them?

I use an oscillator (aka, tone tracer). terminate the patch panel end and plug the signal generator in, then find the tone on the other end of the 4 bundle. I tend to then mark the cables 1foot back from the faceplate. Purely because we have to move datapoints about and if the cable is labeled as well as the modules it makes life easier in the future.
