How unlock iPhone 3GS

Father in law got a iPhone 3GS that he got with O2 and he left them a while ago but they won't unlock the phone for him we have contacted them several times without success. Is there any ways we can do it ourselves legally

What IOS and baseband?

1. It'll have to be on 5.0.1 to unlock using Redsn0w
2. If you have baseband 05.16.05 you'll need to install ipad baseband during Redsn0w, then Ultrasn0w

Can't remember the rest, like getting 3g to work, but Google is your friend and there's tons of stuff about the 3gs
