Got a mate who managed to bend the pins on his Pentium 4 2.53ghz so needed a replacement. Pointed him to one from the bay which he bought for £20.

Now he's saying that doesn't work but it did at first. Said it got to windows load up screen and then crashed. Thing is he didn't have any thermal compound. No big deal I thought as the P4 would have throttled back before heat damage occured right?

Now I've discovered he actually ran it without any heatsink/fan on at all

Now it doesn't work and he wants the guy to replace it.

So question is how much chance is there he broke the P4 himself? or could it have been damaged before?

Don't group Athlons into one, i've tested A64s without sinks to see what'd happen and not one of em smoked, cut off quite quickly. Have also tested an old 1500+ a few years ago on a board with the proper circuitry and it cut out pretty quick without damaging a thing.
Hence me saying Athlon and not AMD ;)
