how well does wine actually work for gaming?

As the title says? How well does wine work? I was going to install Ubuntu alongside windows, but I've decided I'm just gonna do a fresh install of Ubuntu. I do game on windows, but its only once or twice a month really. Is it completely unplayable or is it fine for people who aren't too picky.

Some games work better than others, same with other software.

Depends on the game, as mentioned above - I've had some good successes and some not so much. Also you probably know but Steam is coming to Linux which might provide a good alternative or compliment to Wine when it comes out, depending of course on which games you want to play

Excellent, cheers guys. Yeah I seen that was mentioned, super excited for that. But the type of games I play are most valve games, so I'm assuming those will be the first to get ported. Exciting times for Linux!

Yeah, it's pretty much a given that most Source games will be ported. Which is great news indeed, it's time that Linux/GNU gets a little more use on my systems.
