Basicly looking at one of these for a first car because theyre fairly low insurance groups, both cat 4 and no too dissimilar in price.

I know the diesiel will have more torque but the 1.6i more acceleration.

Anyone help me out?

cheers

fairly blunt answer lol, well my budget is just under £2000 for the car

what would you recommend?

not forgettin its my first car

Both hopelessly slow. 1.7DTi hopeless slow and irritatingly noisy.

Get 1.6.

Better still get something else.

Make sure for your £2k it isn't the vauxhall 1.7td engine, the later post 2000 engine was the izusu, 75bhp/122ftlb, yes not quick at all but ok....

The 1.7dti is more economical than the xantia and not as noisy, not a bad car/engine combo, but not great.I liked my Astra :o

Test drive one if you want to, see what's best for you, obviously try others in the same class, if that's the size of car you're after..

The 1.6 isn't great, old 8v design, slower than the 1.4 16v.

is that the 74bhp 1.6? if so it must be pretty awful :p

I've got a 1.7 dti and i'd say they're pretty much identical speed wise. No idea what the stats say but i've played with a 1.6i before from a rolling start of about 30mph and the distance between us didn't change at all from 30-100~ (On a private road).

There is 16V 1.6 engine with around 100PS iirc in that range as well...

I have a 1.7dti and its a slug with a bad leg... im sure ive seen cyclists overtake me :(

But I have done 25k miles over the last year and its done them with no issues at all.
Done a real mix off round town driving and motorways and averaged 50mpg.

The insurance for the year was only £180 fully comp where as my previous car (2l mk1 mondeo) was over £300 tpft.

So depending what you want could be an ideal car (having it fully loaded dosnt seem to make any difference to it) and if you do over 15k miles a year could be worth it cost wise, if not get a petrol.... they will be quicker and more fun :) (imho)

The 1.6 8v is around 82bhp.

Only the estate and the newer ones were. The t to about the X regs only had 74bhp. - My old one did and it was a V plate.

It was eventually replaced with the asthmatic 1.4 16v which has 90bhp.

Having owned the 1,6 8v Astra I Can say its a car I wouldn't like again. The engine was fine for normal town / a road driving but struggled on the motorway. The 1.7DTI would no doubt be the same, although it would have more mid range pull.

I will say though if you have to get an astra look at the 1.6 16v or above or look at something different instead like the focus.

I really like the 1.7DTi actually.

Quick enough, not loads of torque, but revs more than most diesels.

They dont sound any worse than other TD's either.

i would go for the 1.7dti, hate diesels but as a 1.6 8v astra can't be described as a drivers car i would take the extra economy.

a lot of the astras im looking at are 1.6 16v's. its the 2nd newest astra, u know the one the police had loads of in maroon. on AT u can pick one up with around 70k on the clock for between £1,500 - £2,000

The Mk4 Astra is a pretty good car, just avoid the 1.6 8v engine like the plague

It's an awful, slow, lacklustre tiresome engine

It's not true to say that the 1.4 16V replaced it. They were both on sale at the same time

The original 1.6 8v had about 74bhp, the later one had 83bhp

The 1.4 16V is quicker, smoother and far more willing. It's not bad at all

Better yet the 1.6 16V offers a little more useful power over the 1.4 and it's group 5 (so should still be cheap to insure)

Look at the SXI - this has uprated suspension and it's the same insurance group

wayy thanks, one post in favour of the astra

sorry if i didnt make it clear which model i was interested in.

thanks for the replies

It will still cost a lot more to insure though.

I tried to get insurance on a 1.8 CD which they quoted me fine, but they wouldn't quote me on a 1.8 sri OR sxi.

Yeah, good point

It's still worth a try though :)
