how would i go about hosting a forum on my website?

You need to add permissions to the right folders, some will need chmod 777 to allow it to write to those folders.

however after being a long time user of phpbb (www.techmonkeys.co.uk) I have now decided to make the move to mybb (http://www.mybboard.com/) as it is a much more highly customisable system and is less attacked by spam bots and the like. Havent finished setting it up yet so am still on phpbb, but it is sooo nearly there.
