Bit of a noob question: Without using P2P torrents, is there a way to directly send a large file to another PC? Basically I want to send a bunch of music to my bro who lives in another city. Any suggestions? Cheers!

install and run freesshd
forward port 22 on your firewall to your pc
make an account on your computer for your bro
get your bro to download and run Winscp
get him to type in your ip address and his new account details
?????
Profit!

Webspace. A service like DropBox. FileZilla server. Or, if the files are large and your upstream speed isn't good, a DVD-R or two in the post.

it does depend on how large the total files are

if you are sending him -say a TB of data, post office is fastest then you can set up any of the other suggestions such as drop box for any other files you have to send at a later date that are smaller so he can be kept up to date

This dropbox thing sounds good, is it a paid service or free? It would only be for smallish amounts of data, but things too big for emails. Post office is too sloooooooow. May have to invest in some webspace.

hamachi on both machines + windows file sharing

or if you don't mind doing a bit of port forwarding..

filezilla server on your machine, and the client on his, use whatismyip.org to get your IP
