As per title I'm coming to the end of my first week on my own in Germany, I have another full week here.

I have only heard a few English people since I got here, I speak no German although most I have spoke to have good English.

I'm a fairly quiet person, not really very out going and I find it hard to just randomly make new friends. There is only so much I can do on my own, I have been working in the day time all week so only had the evenings where I haven't had much to do, mostly I have browsed the internet.

I was very tempted to chat to a girl sat on her own in McDonalds but in the end wimped out in case she didnt speak any English and made me look like a tard.

I'd ask for advice but I guess the only thing to do is man up and attempt conversation with people while trying not to look like a weirdo stalker type.

Any members currently in Cologne? lol

Well at least there most people speak good english so it shouldn't be too difficult.

I came to KL without knowing anyone as well, bit of a risky move but its been good and have made some new friends !

I'm pretty quiet myself within reason outside my group of friends/girlfriend.

Probably not too well in the beginning to answer your question. Although it would probably be a situation when I would rather uncharacteristically become ridiculously forward and outgoing. Simply to try my best not to end up travelling home with my tail between my legs.

Everyone's different though. Some people take to it easily, other don't. Some have bad luck with the circumstances if they are outgoing etc and others who are shy find everything going their way to help them out for the first few weeks.

Did you not attempt to learn even the basics of the language before you went out there?

Most Germans I have met speak English as a second language and speak it better than me lol.

If I knew I was going to be going on my own I would defo learn some of the basics of the language then you don't come across as ignorant. (Which I was told I was by a German student when I was in Italy because I couldn't speak any other languages, I was with 6 friends though do didn't feel the need at the time)

Draw a small square moustache with a pen above your lip. Guaranteed to get you a lot of attention and help break the ice.

I coped fantastically on my own in the US :)

I wish I was in the US, there is a slight language barrier here, even if they do speak English I have to talk slower for them to understand.

As for learning the language, I was sent here on very short notice, I am trying to make the effort but pronunciation is a problem.

I'd take advantage of my accent & try & smash some Germanian pasty, Women Love the new guy. ;)

Lol, I'm not going to Amsterdam for the weekend.

I think I'm going to have to get right out of my shell tonight or over the weekend, let's hope I don't scare anyone. If I do make a fool of myself, you guys will be the first to know :p

Well I have just been released from jail, from what I understand they won't be pressing charges...

Just kidding, I had a fantastic night, met a load of german guys that had been on an English course together, they said I could tag along and I ended up drinking cocktails till gone 3 am. Result.

Now to find something to do today.
