How would you play this?

Hi

Purchased a new Mazda 6 using company car allowance, went for the 175PS engine as opposed to the 150PS.

Noticed the other day though that the sticker inside the drivers door sill indicates it is the 150PS engine. All financial paperwork indicates it is a 175PS and the dealer has emailed me to advise their records show it as a 175PS.

There doesn't appear to be any way I can easily verify this myself, no obvious engine markings etc. At some point I'll obviously go into / get the dealer to send me a photo of a 150PS / 175PS to verify any visible differences.

So how would you play things? I am thinking the below

1) Replacement sticker on the assumption the engine is correct. Purely for future selling purposes.
2) insist on the dealer / Mazda providing confirmation of how I can verify this myself other than just taking their word for it.
3) small good will gesture for the inconvenience (free first service?)

If the engine is wrong then that's a whole other issue! I'd be happy to keep it as it feels quick enough, plus the lower emissions would drop the tax bracket. Would obviously expect financial compensation for the difference plus a good will gesture.

What would you do? The dealer doesn't have a letterbox.

Thanks

Mike

I'd perhaps suggest calling Mazda direct and asking them, as it sounds like your dealer is a bit useless. I can't believe the 175PS is completely indistinguishable in every way to the 150? That would make for a nightmare on the production line surely? In the case that there is no way to know, then they should pay for a straightforward horsepower test that I'm sure a rolling road simulator would be able to determine.

A quick check with Mazda would confirm, perhaps via a different dealer as sadly I've lost the ability to take what dealers tell me at face value.

Ask for proof to confirm it is 175PS and ask for replacement of the sticker. It may just have been a mistake of it having 150PS printed on it.

Or 0-60 run. ;)

Is there not an engine code on the block that would confirm what it is?

Hoping there is but will naturally need the dealer / Mazda to explain how it is interpreted. Out of all of the stickers / panels / codes in the engine bay I've not come across anything that has reference to 150 or 175.

The dealer has asked me to email them the chassis number (which I have done) so awaiting their reply.

will also check my V5 later to see if there are any signs in there although would the DVLA just go off whatever info the dealer gives them??

Thanks

Mike

Get your chassis code, take to Mazda and let them tell you

Yes, I've emailed the dealer with this so just waiting for their reply.

Out of interest would you be happy with trusting a response from them or would you be insistent on finding out how to verify yourself?

I think that's the main question of my original post. Would you be pushy for verification or would you take their word for it? And would you pursue a gesture of good will??

Thanks

Mike

Just phone another dealer with the chassis code and they'll be able to tell you instantly, pointless emailing the same dealer as they'll just take an age to respond and probably just give the same answer.

There will likely be an engine code somewhere. On VW's it's in the boot at the wheel well (at least used to be), it had information like engine code and paint code and stuff. I would imagine there would be similar information on your motor too.

I've got access to Mazda's service portal and part catalogues which have a VIN lookup and should state the power output. If you want to email me the VIN I'll happily check for you.

Alternatively I'd call the service department of another Mazda dealer and just ask them.

I may have missed it but the OP hasn't mentioned it is registered as a 175 model only that he was going to check the V5

Cars are registered by the dealer so if all the paperwork says its a 175 then the admin people may register it as such. Of course, it could be that they have registered the wrong car and the 175 you were meant to get is still sitting unregistered i.e. there has been a mixup with 2 identical cars (apart from engine) with similar VINs

But it's been registered as a 175.

I used to had a Saab 9-3 TiD which was registered as a TTiD - the latter has much lower CO2. The v5 had the correct CO2 for the single turbo engine that was actually in it.

It may or may not always work this way, but checking the v5 for a discrepancy wouldn't hurt

Hello

A quick but inconclusive update on this.

The V5 suggests it is a 175PS model by the declared CO2 figures. I'm wary though that the DVLA just go off whatever the dealers tell them instead of anything more clever / controlled??

The dealer confirms that he has checked the chassis number against Mazda's database which indicates it should be a 175PS engine. They are therefore consulting Mazda for further input.

I have asked the dealer to ensure that they ask Mazda to clarify how a general customer can verify themselves which engine is fitted rather than taking their word for it.

Mistakes are possible, my dad bought a nearly new Toyota last year and it was registered as a completely wrong trim on the V5 compared to the actual car, only identified as it was missing manufacturer installed options. Turns out someone filled out the paperwork wrong at the dealer. Have you tried any specialist Mazda forums to see if anyone knows there?

No not yet, will wait and see how far I get with my dealer first. If I've not got anywhere by the end of this week with them then I'll do some more digging.

Thanks
