How would you play this?

I'd speak directly to Mazda UK, from what I've seen on the MX5 forums they are very good at getting specific information like this (on MX5 nutz various people have had them get info and paperwork for JDM spec imported 'Eunos' roadsters, sometimes they need specific documentation in order to register them in other EU countries and so on, not everywhere is is relaxed as the UK about imports and some countries will struggle to understand how a JDM model car gets imported to Britain but then somebody else wants to import and register it properly in yet another country...now we're talking 20+ year old cars that were grey imports, Mazda could have quite easily said jog on, too much hassle and too long ago....but no, they have obtained information and paperwork via Mazda Japan even for these sorts of obscure cases).

...Noticed the other day though that the sticker inside the drivers door sill indicates it is the 150PS engine...

I'm leaning towards it being what the sticker says it is and the dealers have messed up all of the paperwork. I'm finding it hard to believe that Mazda could / would make this mistake in their factory; which I assume has no margin for error in such matters.

no offence to any decent car dealers on here but every single dealership I've dealt with have been absolute idiots.

Are then any other details on the sticker that you can check. If they're also wrong I'd be inclined not to trust the sticker. However if they're correct I'd be very concerned.

How long have you had the car?

10 seconds on google says that all it needs is plugging in at the dealer and the software version on the ECU will tell you what output it is.

That apparently is the only difference between the 150 and 175ps engines, unlike on say a mondeo, where the higher output engine has a larger turbo.

Hi

So to answer a few points raised

1) The online VIN decoders do not state power output.
2) I cannot find any other markings elsewhere on the car.
3) I've had the car for approx 4 weeks now, bought from new, first registered keeper.
4) I'm giving my dealer the opportunity to resolve by Sunday before me approaching Mazda direct. Chased them up again this evening.

i've worked in a main dealership and this does happen. especially if they've pre-registered a shed load in a hurry to up their figures.

vw registered my car as a 5 door. it's a 3 door. photographic evidence and a letter to the DVLA got it sorted but still, a hassle i could've done without.

The dealer can tell you what power out put it is in 2 minutes by plugging the car in.

I've told you what needs to be done, go and do it!
