However did we play games without G Sync and FreeSync?

I mean why are all the young ones on here going mad for GSync and FreeSync with the higher refresh rate Monitors? I don't know how to phrase this properly but I'm just finding it so annoying lol

I suppose what I'm getting at is, Before all the marketing of it all we were playing our games fine with no problems. Now it seems to be a problem if you don't have it?

Some sane person please explain this to me, preferably someone who doesn't own an iphone.

To be honest with you I don't ever plan to get one of these monitors ! being a gamer since I was 18 years old the only things that matter too me is 60 FPS max for shooters and max quality :) Now thats all you need. I really don't get why people buy 144 FPS monitors when you would have to buy 2 x 980 Ti at £500 + pop and also the technology doesn't work how it should ! so its technically a waste of money. This is my view any away.

However did we play games without G Sync and FreeSync?

We had CRT Monitors. 0ms Input Lag, Refresh rates upto 200hz (lower resolutions)

This whole 60 fps nonsense is a relatively new phenomenon, due to that is the maximum lcd's could display until recently.

It used to be a standard minimum to have 100Hz+/fps+ for any twitch type gaming. Things regressed a bit when lcd's took over.

That said the new sync systems are good at avoiding tearing.

I could live without it aswell. It's better for low refresh. But if your not dropping frames it's not worth it. Couldnt play happily with 60hz though.

U2412m. 60hz. 1200p. 16:10. PWM backlight

It's a brilliant monitor, and compared to what I used to game on (post CRT!) it's fantastic.

We're all a little spoiled these days.

That said, when we have g-sync OLED 21:9 I'll be throwing my monitor at the screen faster than you can say "holy hell which port do I put my willy in?".

PS. I actually sent back the PG279Q because I couldn't get on with the crap uniformity, BLB, awful glow e.t.c I didn't find sync or high refresh that great. Quite happy going back to the U2412M.

Well, it's quite simple, regular 60Hz LCD monitors are useless for gaming, I would even go so far as to say they are useless for watching movies on too. There is tearing, slow response time, judder, input lag etc.

It's just that in the period of time between the ending of CRT monitors and the rise of LCD monitors, there was nothing else. We just put up with the shortfalls. There were things we could do to help with some of these like limiting frame rates, turning on Vsync etc. But each of those solutions had their drawbacks. Mainly input lag.

The arrival of high refresh rate monitors really changed things for the better. If you play any sort of twitch shooter FPS games, the difference between playing on a 60Hz and 120hz or higher monitor is night and day. But you can even notice the difference in normal desktop use too. Smoother mouse movements, less blur.

Freesync and Gysnc were developed to counter tearing while playing games. They do this by matching the refresh rate of the monitor to the frame rate of the game. Which make games really smooth. An added advantage of this is that it also works for movies too.

You might not notice the difference in every game, but, in games where your frame rate is between 35 and 90, the difference is huge. Games that were a choppy mess are now buttery smooth.

It's kind of the same principle as an SSD though isn't it? You don't know what you are missing out on until you try it then you'll never want to live without it. Granted I've never experienced g sync or higher refresh rate but I love my 1440p monitor.

Posted from iPhone ;)

What? You don't need 2 x 980Ti's to run a 144Hz monitor? The advantages are there no matter what your frame rate. Why does the technology not work like it should? This is news to me.

First person shooters are way better when played on a 144Hz monitor. Seriously, get a lend of a 144Hz monitor and try it on your PC and compare it directly to the monitor you have. You will find it very hard to go back to a 60Hz monitor.

I can't believe you are gaming since 18 years old and are missing out on high refresh rate monitors.

Simples, once you use it and see what a game changer it is, you realise how horrible gaming was without it.

+1.

Things change over time. Years ago there only used to be 2D games - I imagine there were people like you complaining that 3D games are not needed etc.

Best to give variable refresh rate technology a go first, before bashing it. It really is a game changer.

I haven't noticed much difference between G-Sync and what I had with V-sync since I got my X34. When I get above 70Hz though I do notice a difference.

Because it allows me to push higher graphical settings at higher resolutions whilst enjoying a tear free, smooth gameplay experience at lower framerates.

To be honest I don't think you know how it works and especially the guy who said you need 2X 980ti's.

I have apart from 2 settings or maybe it was 1 maxed out The Division at 1440p and my framerates sometimes drop to 45fps and everything remains fluid as if it were 60fps plus.

Don't knock it until you tried it.

This post is not affiliated with OCUK or Nvidia in any way since I actually have something positive to say.

I didn't think G-Sync was worth the extra when buying my ultra wide and the 100hz refresh is never going to happen on AAA titles unless you have SLI and I'm never going SLI as I feel it is a rip off in the state it has been in. I would rather have a constant 60hz/60fps with one top end card than two or more with the headaches. Also a lot of people seem to have some issue or another with G-Sync or FreeSync and I would rather have a stress free experience.

I will probably wait till OLED and G-Sync or FreeSync have matured before going to this type of screen and hopefully by then single GPU solutions can pump out higher frames to take advantage of the high refresh rates.

My screen is a 60hz 3440x1440 but overclocks to 75hz without dropping frames and does everything I need and very happy with it, the cost of these 100hz ultrawides is silly for the same panel that has been cherry picked and in some cases will not even hit the 100hz they state and really they are selling 60hz screens with overclocking features built in. I would rather wait for true/native high refresh rate panels that don't need overclocking in this manner. We also don't know what this overclocking is going to do to some of these screens in time too and how long they will survive in that state.

Also I'm looking forward to 32:9 41" and 49" screens to that are coming and larger panels than 34" for the higher resolution of 3440x1440 or higher.

Quite easily and have done since the early 2000s / Best CRT (Iyyama VM 454) @ 120hz is all I need for my FPS gaming :)

Simple answer for me is I cannot stand tearing, so used to have to run a game vsync locked at 60fps or I couldn't stand the judder. So this basically involved spending shed loads on hardware and running 2 GPUs, or turning settings down, which I hate doing. Even before gsync came along I knew something was 'wrong' with pc gaming because of this but didn't know the technical reasons why.

Once gsync arrived I jumped on it immediately. It was what I'd been looking for for years, but without knowing it could be done.

Gsync = Total game changer for me.
