It's been out for about 3 months now, and I completed it last night. I have played it before in 2001, but thought it would be interesting to compare notes this time round. I took the low-level approach, and this was my final configuration as I was about to enter the final boss (or series of bosses rather). Yes, I changed Rinoa's name to Millie because she looked like a 'Millie' to me :-) I kept everyone as default in FF7.

The GF'd up party had around 200 str, 23% eva, 90 mag. My approach was therefore just brute strength, and it's surprising how quickly the bosses go with an average level of 18 and my chars are hitting non-crit at 2500 a pop. That's even using just the initial weapons. Sure, it meant that Squall didn't get his Lion Heart limit, but I couldn't be arsed the grind the mats needed for each weapon (even though I found all of the Weapons Monthlies mags ok). It meant that I didn't get Doomtrain either but I got the other 15 summons ok. The 'harder' ones like Junbo Cactur, Jumbo Tonberry and Eden (off Ultima Weapon) were piece of cake when, again, your party just uses white damage. For low-levelling btw, you need to defeat the Diablos summon then learn his 'enc-none' asap. That will prevent random encounters.

I'm eager to play it again now and try and get Doomtrain this time, and at least some of the weapons. Oh, and also, don't use Eden on the last boss. I learnt from last night's fight that if you use it, she takes it off you!!

Thought I'd bump this, as I'm sure others here are playing the newly released Steam version. Plus it's Sunday night when everyone's in :-)

I started FF8 again just now, sticking to the low level plan. I'm just about to do the Timber Maniacs / fake president train-uncoupling (the most annoying quest in the entire game!) and everyone's level 8 atm. Defeated Diablos as soon as I got the magic lamp so that I can start learning mug. Got Zell's card as well. P.S. low level approach this time won't be via Diablos' enc-none but instead via Quetzcotol's card ability. You still get AP which trains your GFs but no EXP.
