So. My trusty i7 920 is refusing to die. And has been annoyingly faithful at 3.8ghz for over 5 years. It won't die!!

I've kept her alive with a new graphics card every two years, but now finally I'm choosing a new PC for the next part of my life.

How's this look?

Bitfenix Colossus case £100
Intel Core i7-4790K £275
Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5 £109
Kfa2 Gtx 970 infin8 black edition £290
Samsung evo 850 SSD 500gb £192
Corsair Builder series CX750w £72
Kingston Huper X 2400 2x 4gb £47
Akasa Venom Medusa cooler £64
Sea gate Baracuda 2tb HdD £67

£1265

Any good?

Hi Stulid. Thanks for your input.

Games and music recording I record guitar using an interface into Podfarm software.

It needs to kick ass with games for sure. Currently playing a lot of Space Engineers and World of Tanks. Needs to be fast.

I think Space Engineers is quite CPU dependant.

Reason I chose the 500gb SSD was that I wanted to get a load of Steam content on there. Never used an SSD before, is a 500gb worth it. Or do people still install steam etc to their HDD?

Ta

Thanks.

That's a great looking spec!

Do you think the performance would be greatly increased over my old i7 920 @ 3.8 and an R9 280x?

Thanks again

Thats the problem as I think you should maybe try keeping the CPU/Board and RAM and adding the other new stuff to see what happens.

I took the plunge.

Ordered a Titan Tanto with a few changes.

- Case: Bitfenix Colossus
- Power Supply: Super Flower 750w Gold PSU
- GTX 970 Infin8 Black Edition.
- CPU: i7 4790k
- Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
- Cooler: Corsair H80i Closed loop Cooler
- RAM: 16GB 2133MHz
- Hard Drive: 500gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD / 1tb Baracuda

Without the large SSD i could have gone to a GTX 980. But i think the benefit of having an SSD, and a large amount of storage on it, will benefit me more than another 15fps on games

I hope to get the I7 to a stable 4.7* with the cooler. Temperature dependant.

I feel bad for your old i7 :( Send it to a good home please :)

She's still an awesome machine. Completely reliable for over 5 years! No issues at all!

i'm upgrading now not because the performance has become sub par, but because finances are going to be tight soon! If i don;t do it now i never will.

Also, i can just shove another 970 in there in a years time, and i'll be set for another 4 years.
