Am looking at getting a laptop instead of my desktop. The plan is to be able to take use it for work, taking it in when I need it, then doing some more work from home (self-employed).

Am looking to spend around £500 - £600 quid and have found this for £500inc VAT.

Processor -AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM84 / 2.2GHZ

RAM -4 GB

Storage - 250 GB

Optical Storage - DVD Super Multi Dual Layer Writer

Display Type - 15.6 in

Notebook Camera Integrated (don't really need this)

Wireless LAN Supported - Yes

Data Link Protocol - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet

Operating System / Software - Windows 7 (would've prefered XP for simplicity..don't mind tho)

Manufacturer Warranty -Service & Suppory 1 year warranty

Video Output / Graphics Processor / Vendor - ATi HD4570 512MB

How does this look? It's an Asus X5DAB-SX028V.

Would you suggest anything else?

And is the Turion any good?

Now the final bit...would this be any good for some light gaming? E.g, don't mind going down to the lowest graphics settings.

Thanks for any help:)

Chris

Thanks for that Nymins:)

Will definitely be going for like that instead.

Annoyingly I've not seen one on the dell site with a 2.4ghz i5 processor for an extra £100..but with the HD4330 gpu instead.

I guess I'd be better sticking with the core2 machine and better gpu?

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help

Chris

The base spec in that offer comes with the Pentium Dual Core T4300. Its exactly the same as a C2D but with a 1mb cache (barely any difference). Its similar and faster than the Core 2 Duo T6400 if you want to compare and a whisker off the Core 2 Duo T6600 that you can upgrade to on the Dell site.

My brother has the HD4330 GPU. Its decent for what it is and will play everything (details on low/medium for demanding games obviously).

The HD4570 however is a much better chip and comparable to the Nvidia 9600m GT. It would be much better for casual gaming.

If you don't need the extra speed of the i5 (which isn't really that much better anyway unless you want to encode video and the like, gaming difference is minimal), then i'd just go for the base £429 Studio 15 i linked. I ordered one two days ago, bargain at that price for the spec and build quality.

Yeah I think your right (Nymins), the use will be fairly light except for the gaming.

Shall go ahead and order that one I think, looks like a very good deal.

Thanks for your help mate.

Wow, ordered the laptop (with a couple of upgrades). The order tracking information changed to shipping, so when the tracking number came through I checked it, thinking that it'd be in some warehouse somewhere in the UK, it's currently in China!!

What madness.

For all of you who were waiting with baited breath, my laptop has arrived!!

Have to say I am very impressed, ended up with the 2.2 dual-core and 4 gig of ram. Flys through windows 7.

Don't think I'm even going to uninstall the dell toolbar as it does look kinda useful...shall be uninstalling the mcafee trial tho, which installed itself without me noticing!!

Anyhoo, thanks for the advice Nymins, am very pleased with it. Will try a few games on it tonight i think..

What upgrades did you add?

Didn't add that much stuff to be honest,

Went up from the pentium dual core 2.1 to the core2 duo 2.2.

Light-up keyboard..seems like a good idea.

Uhm, didn't go for the recommended 6GB ram lol

Think that's about it, just the standard stuff really. Got the case they recommended...wish I hadn't as it's fairly crappy, but does the job I suppose.

I just ordered the same one but minimum spec plus i ordered a 17" model with onboard GPU for £399 inc del.
that website has some pretty decent dell offers.
