Hows this???

Well I do like to have good sound :)
Also I'm really not an AMD man.

As my budget is low atm I'm just going to be using a 17"/19" I cant remember what size it is lol, so I'm gaming at 1280*800 probably, maybe abit higher if I can wrangle it.

Atm I'm thinking of taking my 160GB HDD from my old rig and upgrading in a few months time.

Games atm I'm just playing STALKER SoC and maybe Farcry 2. I know at that 1280*800 res the 4890 would handle them fine.

you probably don't even need a 4890 for that resolution, and your motherboard should provide perfect sound anyway.

replace the 4890 with a 4870, ditch the soundcard..

2 secs i'll knock something up.

Atm I'm gaming at these res, but I want to upgrade to a 24" monitor in a few months, I know that I could ditch the soundcard and put that money towards the monitor but i really do like to have decent sound as I'm a headset guy all the way.

I'm happy to look at what your mocking up :)

Yeah that looks like a good spec, but what about when I want to up the res in a few months time?

Yeah I was going to use the Win7 OS.

Yeah I know lol, I dunno just never liked the thought of having an AMD, silly I know but meh. :P

I know that ATI are owned by AMD, I dunno, just me and my silly ways, just like how some people dont like using Nvidia cards and prefer ATI and vice versa.

Yeah thats true, I could just buy one of the GT300 cards when they come out.

I prefer your first spec though, mainly 'cuz it's cheaper XD

Yeah, so any ideas just on how good the GT3000 cards are going to be?
So when are the 5890's going to be released?

Recon that a 5890x2 will be in the works?

they will be light years ahead of any gtx 295 or 4890, so something to look forward to. I for one will be keeping my gtx 285 for a while because I don't need much more than that.

Sweet! Well I could put the money I saved from buying a 4870 towards getting a GT3000 or 5000 series card I guess.

Might be awhile after they get released though.

he's saying that no games right now need the immense power of the GT300's, so a 4890 or 4870 will be fine.

People would get a gt300 for future proofing, but it's up to you.

I would stick with a 4870 for now, and in 6-10 months time, if you want a 58xx card, then by all means get one.

I seeeee, Well I wouldn't upgrade straight away anyway, It would be a good few months.

I think I'll take your origional spec for now, mainly just as I need/want a new rig, my main rig is really bad and I'm using my lappy for everything!
Which is hardly brilliant either. :S

So your buying a dead socket board but waiting for new series graphics cards to come out...

Makes sense </sarcasm> ;)

A 955 quad core and 4890 will last you 2-3 years easy, much better and cheaper but hey it's your money :)

Well spec me a rig then.

Also, I am going to upgrade everything aswell, I'd be buying a deadsocket board CPU etc... for now, and upgrade later down the line. I just want something to get started with.

I would personally agree with shadowake on this one mate.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying that I want something to get started with now and slowly upgrade as I go along :)

Might be better to get a Quad and a 4890, upgrade as I go along, I'm talking a good few years here though.

If I were you, i'd go with my 1st spec.

In a years time upgrade to core i5 (replacement for core i7), some ddr3 and a socket 1366 motherboard. 4-8 months later Sell your 4870 and get a 58xx.

That sounds like a good way to do things to me.

Any idea how the core i5 will fare when compared to the i7's?
More powerful? Less powerfull? I've heard that Intel are going to discontinue some of the i7's.

yeah, the i7 920 and 940's will be discontinued from september or so. core i5 will be around the same as them, but we're not 100% sure.

I guess theres no way to know until they get benchmarked.

Still, even after Sep you'll still be able to buy i7's until they run out etc...

I'd love to get a 920 D0.

But if the i5's are as good then I'd just upgrade to one of those.
