I recall on a school trip in the 1970s we had lunch sitting on some of the stones. Sorry I know that doesn't help the OP but it's a shame things have changed.
I'm assuming there is a charge now too. Back then it was free and open. You just walked up to it and everyone treated the stones with respect.
