Just been given a hozelock car brush that you can put shampoo into. What sort of shampoo can I put in there? Any old car shampoo?

dont put a brush anywhere near your paintwork

It will just scratch the paintwork at a very fine level.

This will rob the car of its finish and make the paint appear "flat" and dull with prolonged use.

+1

Buy yourself a wash mitt. Search for 'clean your car', 'i4detailing' etc etc but don't whatever you do use a brush.

You generally use solid sticks of shampoo in those brushes.

They're quite useful for cleaning beneath the skirts and bumpers. (The parts of the cover that are usually out of sight). But as others have said, don't use them on your main paintwork.

thats a good point. You dont want to be using your nice clean lambswool wash mitt under the side skirts where there will be tons of grit, tar, grime and general rubbish that you dont want anywhere near your nice wash mitt.

i was a bit sceptical at first.

But i can see the evidence on my volvo.

its a dark blue sort of colour, it looks OK in photos but in real life it looks a little "flat"

it doesnt really gleam as much as the paint did on my VXR. Stick the thing under the spotlight and you see the paintwork is swirled to hell. Prolonged use of a car brush to wash it with will just do this to it.

Granted the effects wont be as bad if you only wash your car once ever 2 months or something, but if you like keeping your car clean and clean it regularly, dont use a brush.

See I've used the hozelock brush before and thought it would be better than a wash mitt! My theory being that having water running through it continuously would wash the grit out, stopping it being dragged across the paintwork. Is it just the brush itself thats the problem? Ie putting a hose in a washmitt would work well?

yeah the bristles on the brush are made from plastic and are quite harsh on the paintwork.

Especially when you apply force to remove stubborn dirt.

Not perfect, but I've used them now and then a car thats never been through a carwash, seems OK...

in fairness, unless your car has been maintained to perfection from the start, it will already have swirls that using a brush every now and then wont make any worse.

Its prolonged use that will make it worse.
