Neighbour asked me to take a look and boy is it slow
only 4GB ram,5400 rpm spinning rust
W10
Reviews mostly say it is a slow cpu, agree as well
Question time:)
Is it worth getting him to buy a new 8GB stick of ram(only 1 ram slot apparently)
and a ssd to replace the hdd?
I am thinking it will be like polishing a Turd but....opinions please

A cheap second hand 120gb or 240gb ssd will make the biggest difference but the A6 is only a dual core cpu, not sure another 4gb would matter.

The extra RAM would help more if you kept the spinning rust as there'd be less swapping but it certainly won't hurt alongside an SSD.
Wifey had something similar from HP and when I looked up the HDD it had a SATA 2 interface. No wonder it was slow.

I'm using couple of older desktops with SATA 2 SSD. Plenty fast enough.

Having trouble guys:(
Put a ssd into this and cannot get w10 to install
tried formatting the usb and installing the w10 iso with both rufus and the windows media creation tool.No go
read the help online, disabling csm and/or secure boot

tried to clone existing hdd to ssd....ssd too small.1tb hdd is bigger than a 1tb ssd:mad:
managed to get it sort of working by deleting the recovery from the image i created and copied to the ssd and it boots and runs BUT the OS will not up date now (its on 1809)
Want a fresh install but can`t seem to get it to work

Any suggestions please.i can usually figure things out but am stumped with this HP laptop

Have to create specific partition it's either mbr or got than eufi...use Rufus. The. Go into bios disable secure boot. Should be able to boot from usb

Bit confused with your reply
Sorry can you dumb it down for me.Have tried disabling secure boot as well
It has a TPM `apparently`would disabling this help?
I am rather loathe to mess too much as atm it is working

It seems rather like you're creating problems for yourself.
Any decent cloning software will adjust the partition sizes if the overall disk sizes are different. As long as the source disk isn't too full, of course.
There is no need to use anything other than the MS Media Creation Tool. In my experience it creates a perfect USB stick every time. If it doesn't boot then you have to look at why, not create another with a different method. There may well be a BIOS setting to allow booting from USB.
HP laptops are generally good. Wifey's new one is good enough that I'm happy using it. HP also makes its laptops upgradeable and publishes service manuals to make it easy.

Tried both methods of creating the usb
was set to boot from usb in bios(while it looked like it was working the screen went all fuzzy like the gfx was fubar)weird, happened a few times like this
tried secure boot on and off
cpu IS NOT upgradeable,soldered on
only 1 slot for mem so not worth paying for a 8 GB stick i thought
used macrium and did not notice ANY option to shrink partitions or only copy data/used blocks (i kinda remember having this option last time i used it)

As i said thank you all for trying to help me,i have given up now as he wanted the laptop back.He seems happy with the speed of use.i.e. booting times and general responsiveness
