Just acquired a HP procurve 2524 as it was just about to be thrown out. I've got it running at home (previous house owner put 4 x cat5 into every room) but its really loud.

I realise it's loud as it's an enterprise switch (or was a few years ago) but can I unplug the fan? It's running in a cool cellar and it doesnt have a great deal of load on it. (3 pc's and a NAS).

Will I get beeps/errors if I disconnect it?

The cellar is directly below the living room. I can hear it but probably no-one else. I just updated the firmware on it actually and it seems to have got quieter:)

I might even just pick up a cheap edimax or tp-link switch, will probably be more power efficient? I think the procurve 2524 uses 36W.

I like the idea of having a managed switch though:o
