Hi All,

I'm able to get hold a HP 6200 Pro Small Form Factor PC dirt cheap and was wondering if I added the gfx below it would make a tolerable gaming pc for the kids?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 "ITX Edition" 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £169.99
Total : £179.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Anyone able to say if it'll fit in the case and the psu has enough juice for it?

Cheers.

SFF cases 9/10 need a half height graphics card.

Looking at the specs its got a
1 low-profile PCIe x16
so no it wont fit.

You need something like this that comes with a low profile bracket (not the one pictured)

which wont be brilliant for playing games.

Personally I would forget it and look for something else. Laptops make better machines for kids because they are not fixed and you can monitor the usage on them easier. ie if you dont go to bed now the laptop goes away ! Works so well wish I had thought of it before. Plus they can bring them downstairs and not be stuck in their room on it all the time. 2nd hand ones if you shop around are quite suitable.

We have these at work, although it may differ CPU & RAM wise as ours were custom specced.

Inside it's an i5 3470 3.6Ghz, so while probably good enough CPU wise for gaming it only has Intel HD graphics. It has 4Gb 1600Mhz dual channel RAM. As varkaniod said it would need a half height card, but only problem being I think it only has a 240W slim PSU so not much could really run on it.

The Nvidia 750 series are available as slim single slot model GPU's such as the KFA2 GeForce GTX 750Ti Razor, and as low profile like the KFA2 GeForce GTX 750 OC "Low Profile".

Quite a few low profile models if you google, some are dual height some look a little shapely so it would be worth looking into sizing with the system you have in mind.
I would be looking for a Ti version if possible, and 2gb memory model.

I believe this model costs around £112 and comes with a low profile bracket too,
GV-N75TOC-2GL - 2GB Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti Low Profile, 28nm, PCIe 3.0, 5400MHz GDDR5, GPU 1033MHz, Boost 1111MHz, Cores 640, DP/DVI/HDMI

These require no PCI-E power cables and some require/consume around 60w at their stock speeds, I doubt you will be overclocking it or using anything higher in resolution than 1080p.

I was considering the 750 series and a mini itx build for my lads room, but they seem content with one of my old LGA 775 systems for now. What really interests me though is they are low power, so a small quiet efficient system can be built that plays many PC games very well on a 1080p tv.

Edit, extreme psu calculator shows an 1155 socket i5 2400 at stock with one dvd drive, one sata hdd, 2x2gb ddr3 and two 80mm fans and the 750 ti as requiring 232w with 282w recommended i5 3470 would be 21w-267w). I am pretty sure that psu calculator is basing that figure on the full size 750ti with a single 6 pin power connector, not a PCI-E lane powered mini gpu. Remove the optic drive, add more efficient cooling, and replace the hdd with an SSD and that will be 196w to 246w (i5 3470 = 182w-232w).

Really depends on what dirt cheap is. While the HP kit I've worked with is pretty solid in terms of reliability, but in terms of usage it'll be a homework, flash games and youtube. Putting a low profile card in will allow it to play old games but is it worth putting money into something like that? not in my opinion. stick the £169.99 in a "build kids gaming pc" fund. or look to get a full size second hand PC that's worth upgrading as the motherboard in that HP will not fit in a standard ATX case.

Pooker has a point, how much are you actually expecting to pay for the HP 6200, how old is it, what are the actual specifications, what is the OS if any?

I have seen 6000 series with old LGA 775 Core2Due 8200 cpu's and i5 2400 too, some with 2gb or ram.

Yet if your prepared to spend nearly £200 on a GPU for the kids, you could probably build a full desktop around the G3258 for not much more.

What sort of games are your kids likely to play?.

I don't have a hp but I do have a dell optiplex gx620 and play older games well, downloaded couple free games from Steam, but not tried them yet, but for me it fits me well.

Specs

Intel pentium d 940 3.2ghz
2gb ddr2 667mhz ram
200gb sata(upgrade)
Ati hd2400(pro I think and an upgrade)
Dell 275w psu
Windows 7 professional 64bit

I picked up the dell for a tenner, upgraded to 200gb(spare drive) and swapped another spare hdd for the hd2400 from a family member and I got no complaints, I play games like sims, return to castle wolf, hitman contracts and various others. Old games but I'm old school gamer.

I got an old but actual gaming machine but don't use it so if this hp you looking at can be had for a similar deal to mine and has a better spec and can upgrade for cheap like mine then I'd say it's worth it unless ofcourse you need a tower.
