Looking at the P8400 / 2.26 GHz and the T5670 / 1.8 GHz version, the T5670 with 1Gb of RAM less comes in at £120 cheaper with our suppliers. Is the extra money worth it for the P8400 CPU?

It's going to be used by my boss which is all desktop applications of Dynamics, PowerPoint and SharePoint so nothing massively stressful from my point of view but will he see a benefit with that core?

Any help appreciated, only thing I can find on the net is bits about its battery life, but it's always going to be plugged in.

Well the old T5670 is a 65nm part as far as I know, with 2mb of cache (it has 2mb disabled to achieve this). Not only does it have a significantly lower clockspeed than the P8400 but it's an older generation of chip. The P8400 is a 45nm Penryn chip, with SSE4. Also 'clock for clock' it will use less power, generate less heat and generally be more efficient than the older 65nm chips. Not to mention it'll befaster clock for clock, let alone when it's clocked 460mhz faster to start with.

I think your boss will find the system with the P8400 is certainly a bit faster in pretty much any useage. Weather or not he will see enough benefit using the applications that he does, I don't know. I'd say it's worth £120 though as you're getting an extra gb of memory along with it.

Look at it this way, if he does decide he wants the machine to handle more demanding applications in the future or he does use it on the battery he will be much better off with the P8400. If he doesn't, ...how important is £120 to him?

This probably didn't help much, I think I've just raised the same question with different wording :p
