Can anyone confirm if this card will work in this server? Or is there an HP equivalent? It needs a PCIe 2.0 x8 slot, but the server specs are ambiguous.

I can't think of any reason it shouldn't work.
However, I have heard of fans running at full speed in servers because the temperatures of drives can't be read correctly.

An HP equivalent depends on your requirement, if the 4 external SAS ports of the H800 are required then it look like the P840 range is the only available choice - but I suspect it will be really expensive overkill.
If you can explain what you want it for a bit more, RAID levels, no. of drives, etc an alternative would be easier to suggest

On an auction site the MD1200s and DL380 are going quite cheaply.

So I'm looking to attach them via external SAS and create a ESXI datastore.

I've read that the 'sea of sensors' approach HP hardware has means that if it is a PCI card that does not meet HP spec or it doesn't know it then the hardware fans spin at full speed and there is nothing you can do. Wheter that will occur with the H800 and DL380G6 I can't say but you could always ask the people on the 'Serve the Home' forums if they've got a similar config.

I will stick with a Dell 610. Does anyone know how to setup a MD1200? Maybe I should pay less for a MD1000 with SAS 3gbps, rather then 6gbps?

I will have two Dell R610s with ESXi with high availability and fault tolerance enabled. So I need shared storage. Perhaps the PS6000 with iSCSI or Starwind?
