I have recently purchased a new laptop (HP DM3) for work due to my HP 2535ea slowly dying on me. After some research I have found out I had the 'usual' issue of the Nvidia graphics card overheating and the solder underneath melting. This started off with the multiple screens and then to the point where when it was turned on nothing would happen and I would just get a blank screen. Anyway I have stripped the new laptop down and have the motherboard out....
I have purchased a new fan as I found out that the bearings have gone in my previous one which caused a terrible humming noise when on for a while. This should have been changed a few years ago and I maybe would not have had the graphics card issue if it was changed then! I had trouble getting the bios battery off the motherboard as the male connector was a real pain to unclip and damaged it in the process. I dont know if you can buy the connectors on their own but I got a whole battery for £3 on ebay.
When I put the heatsink back together I have noticed that their is a gap (see picture below) between the graphics card and the copper. Would this be OK a large amount of thermal paste to fill the gap or do I need to use something else. When I took it apart I noticed that there was paste on the chip and on the Nvidia there was a blue tack material (remains of) on it. Here is a picture of the gap....
On the other side of the motherboard, what are the two chips shown in the picture - one has the Intel logo on it and the other is just black. They also had a peice of blue tack looking material on them (see second picture down) - do I need to replace this also and what is it for?
Thanks for your help
