Hi all,

I've just purchased my first laptop, i've always been keen on desktops due to the increase in costs on laptops to get good specifications.

I have picked up a HP G62-340US. The specification is as follows:

HP G62-340US
CPU AMD Athlon II P340 / 2.2 GHz
Number of Cores Dual-Core
RAM 3 GB ( 1 x 1 GB + 1 x 2 GB )
Max RAM Supported 8 GB
Technology DDR3 SDRAM
Form Factor SO DIMM 204-pin
Slots Qty 2
Hard Drive 320 GB HDD / 5400 rpm
Interface Serial ATA-150
ype 15.6 in
LCD Backlight Technology LED backlight
Max Resolution 1366 x 768 ( HD )
Widescreen Yes
Graphics Processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
Max Allocated RAM Size 1405 MB
Technology 6-cell Lithium ion
Capacity 47 Wh

This will never play any form of games but will play the occasional HD movie so the power of the graphics isn't an issue however I would like the machine to be fast loading up so eventually I plan to replace the hard drive with either 1 or 2 SSDs (possible raid) This won't be straight away as im going to wait until the 120gb ssds drop down to £80 like they were just before christmas! - has anyone else noticed the recent increase in price of these!!

I've also been looking at the CPU i'm keen to upgrade this to something that is a bit more powerful to help load applications faster, I know the SSD will have the most impact but replacement CPUs for these machines are <£50 on ebay so it seems a good idea. I have researched around the socket and supported CPUs in the HP manual for this machine and there is quite a range of CPUs available. I'm aware that there is dual core, tripple core and quad core in these machines and have looked on the passmark CPU benchmark website and the quad core cpu comes out on top. I'm not 100% sure if this is the right decision though as im aware most applications don't support quad and the phenom clock speeds on the quad cores are quite low. The following are supported CPUs:

AMD Phenom™ N930 Processor
(2.0 GHz, 2 MB total L2 cache, 1333
MHz)—Quad core 35 W

AMD Turion II P560 Processor (2.5
GHz, 2 MB L2 cache 1066MHz)—
Dual core 35 W

AMD Athlon II N370 Processor (2.5
GHz, 1 MB L2 cache 1066MHz)-
Dual core 35 W

AMD Turion II N570 Processor (2.7
GHz, 2 MB L2 cache 1066MHz)-
Dual core 35 W

AMD Phenom II N970 Processor
(2.2 GHZ 2 MB L2 cache
1333MHz)-Quad core

AMD Phenom II P960 Processor
(1.8 GHZ 2 MB L2 cace 1066MHz)-
Quad core 25 W

AMD Phenom II N870 Processor
(2.3 GHZ 1.5 MB L2 cache
1333MHz)—Triple core

AMD Phenom II P860 Processor
(2.0 GHZ 1.5 MB L2 cache
1066MHz)-Triple core 25 W (for
model 1.2 only)

AMD Phenom II N660 Processor 3.0
GHZ 2 MB

AMD Phenom II P950 Processor
(2.6 GHZ 2 MB L2 cache
1333MHz)-Quad core 25 W

AMD Athlon II P360 Discrete
Processor 2.3 GHZ 35 W (for model
1.2 only)

AMD Champlain V160 Processor
(2.4 GHZ 512 MB L2 cache
1066MHz)-Single core 25 W

Could any one advise and elaborate into their decision on why i should chose any of these CPUs over the others.

Thanks for your time,

Debate away :)
