I'm toying with the idea of buying my first laptop, but don't know the first thing about them.

My bro works at HP so can get a good bit of discount if it's an HP.

I only really play WoW, but want a lappy that can play this maxed out.

Need's wireless but that's about it.

Any suggestions please?

HP HDX16-1005EA or HDX16-1010EA

Can you get him to find out the differences between the two models as the spec's are identical on the HP site apart from the following:

HDX16-1010EA: up to 2302 MB Total Available Graphics Memory with 512 MB dedicated
HDX16-1005EA: Up to 2303 MB total graphics memory with 512 MB dedicated

Or the any from the rest of the HDX range:

Thanks for the quick repsonse.

I read another thread that mentioned the HDX16-1005EA.

I can get one of these for £745.20.

Looking around that seems to be £50 cheaper than most places & it's available for immediate despatch.

None of the cheaper models worth a look then?

Cheers.

Don't know, haven't looked.

I've only looked at a few laptops and then only those with 64-bit versions of Vista pre-installed (why have a 64-bit laptop with a 32-bit OS installed).

For a start I warn you the 20" HDX laptops are BIG. To play WoW maxxed these days withn a decent framerate at 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 you'd want something like an 8800 or 9800M mobile chip and a decent dual core CPU. Unfortunately with the new realtime shadowing etc, WoW is a fair chunk more demanding maxed than it used to be.

The 9600M will run WoW reasonably if you're moderate on the settings, but you have to remember laptop chips aren't as fast at the desktop equivalents, the 9800series M chips are a little slower than the 8800GT in general.
I'd also recommend a 7200RPM HDD if theres an option, as this is the bottleneck on most laptops, and it will help your loading times both ingame, and whilst loading programmes, but does consume a bit more battery power. BUT lets be honest, HDX series arent designed for mass mobility!

Also keep in mind the HDX series are basically desktop replacements, so they're typically a lot heavier and more a PITA to carry around than most laptops, and if mobility is key you might want to take at 15" gaming laptops like the one OcUK do. More expensive possibly, but fast and more mobile, not to mention £1200 will get you a very nice OcUK custom laptop that will rival most of the HDX series bar the ones with 8/9 series SLI cards.

It's only for use in the home, so size isnt a problem.

I'll look into the HDD speed, see if there's any option. Thanks for the info.

Are there any cheaper laptops (not necessarily HP) that will handle WoW with half desent settings that might be worth a look. I probably won't ever use most of the stuff that HP comes with, as it will be purely so that I can play WoW & be in the same room as my wife :D

Well as I mentioned, if you're willing to drop lower, most laptops with dedicated graphics will run WoW, it just depends on what resolution and settings you want to play :)
The 9600GT as mentioned will give moderate performance for example, the 3650 coudl play on lower settings, just depends on what you're after. Checkout the OcUK ones as the more expensive ones arent bad value considering the specs, although the cheaper ones are a bit more lacklustre compared some deals you can sometimes get in the retailers.

Where abouts did you find this laptop for immediate despatch mate?

I'd happily pay up to £835 for it.

Any info would be great, cheers!

Edit out the competitors or your first post may end up as your last.

*Edit*
If you read the original post, the poster's brother works at HP so may mean he can get it direct from HP at the discounted price.
