HP Microserver NAS vs self built

So I've recently rebuilt my old Hp Microserver and its dog slow. It's about 6 years old and has 4 2tb drives in it. Used to stream films from that to my boxee box. I've recently installed plex on my Xbox one and in future at Apple TV. The Microserver isn't powerful enough to transcode anymore...so I can either get the new gen Hp Microserver or build a NAS box that can transcode and host my 4 2tb drives and be small. Main worry with this is cost and if I went self built I'd want it to be able to process 4K. Any recommendations?

No promotion of OcUK's competitors
We, Overclockers UK (OcUK) are happy to provide the resources of these forums to responsible individuals without charge. They cost a substantial amount of money to maintain and use considerable amounts of bandwidth which is paid for exclusively by us. As you know OcUK are in the computer hardware business and therefore the promotion of OcUK's competitors is forbidden. Examples of promotion are :- •Posting links to competitors websites
•Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
•Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
•Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
•Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing
•Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors

•Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
•Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
•Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
•Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Well I didn't post any hints at names and OcUK doesn't stock these big vendor branded servers anyway. Also the site only sells server items, OcUK do not sell these products at all. (they stock desaktop PC's but only DELL and HP and Lenovo stuff, and to be honest anybody looking to buy a DELL desktop PC would not be using the OcUK forums to help decide on their purchase choice)

I class it the same as linking / hinting to a book on Amazon, because OcUK doesn't sell it either.

If a mod is unhappy feel free to remove my post, but there are many posts and threads about HP microservers and hidden links to cashback deals too.

Even OcUK staff mention competitiors now and again, I thiknk the rules are a little more relaxed they they were 5 years ago when I worked at OcUK.

Can you not use kodi and do the transcoding on the target device?

The problem with transcoding at the source is that it depends what res your streaming at, and the number of streams. You'll need quite a beefy server I'd imagine to transcode 4k.
