I have been asked to upgrade the storage on a HP ML110 loaded with Server 2003.

the current config is, 2x 250gb sata hard drives not using the on board raid but are using the server 2003 raid (in disk management)

I have to install an extra 2x 1tb drives and want these to be mirrored for storage. Can I use the hardware raid while keeping the boot drive functioning? Or will I have to use the server 2003 raid on another set of mirrors.

In past experiences Servers don’t like having 2x sets of mirrors as its strains the disk controller.

Can anyone help with this situation?

Which generation is the ML110? Do you have the part code of the unit? This will determine what the unit can do and if a particular RAID controller is needed.
Let me know and I will take a look at work tomorrow if I get time (and someone else hasn't answered already):)

I think you will be ok running 2 mirrors next to each other our servers do it all the time.

But i would personally get a good raid card and build it how it was meant to be built as your current set up is going to be no where near as quick.

Another vote for decent hardware RAID controllers not struggling with 2 (or more) mirrors.

Software RAID is nasty IMHO - is a rebuild onto a new controller out of the question?

Its a huge job as its a curriculum server (school)
Its a Generation 4 server. curse the small company in my town that I know who built it!

Okay, if it is a G4 and you want to get a hardware raid controller. then your only option is the E200 with 128MB cache. The part code for that is 411508-B21, you will also need the SAS / SATA 4 port cable to go with it which is part code 430479-B21.
That card will support the following Raid levels:

RAID 5 (Distributed Data Guarding)
RAID 1, 1+0 (Striping & Mirroring)
RAID 0 (Striping)

You can put up to 32 logical drives on that card and it would be okay.

Thanks Origin!
I have installed the extra drives using the OS raid. Although Not ideal its will keep the server running. They called me with a problem saying that the teachers could not save any data. This was because the drive only had 200mb spare.

So what I have done is a short term solution. The raid card will go on order tomorrow.

Cheers mate.
