I'm looking at changing my server soon - its used to serve my development needs plus the media needs for the house

At the moment I have a quad core Opteron + 8GB Ram with 4 2TB disks in raid for storage - booting from a pair of 64Gb SSDs.

I'm using a stripped back Fedora with KVM installed as my hypervisor, with VM's for LDAP/SMB + Storage running fulltime. I spin up lots of other VM's for development work, but typically cant run more than 8 VM's at once if they are performing any kind of intensive tasks.

I'm looking to upgrade things - and feel that I need at least two sockets and the option to get to 32GB RAM as a minimum. Storage wise I think I would like to have a mixture of Flash and around 8 TB of storage. I need a peak of around 32 (small) VM's with this system.

Has anyone got any thoughts or comments on the new G8 ML350's? Or any competitively priced Alternatives?

I think the "e" version rather than the "p" version will suffice - and the base unit of the 350e is very reasonably priced (£510 inc VAT).

As I understand it - the only difference between the "p" and "e" versions, is the lack of SAS controller, no redundant PSU option, and a different NIC on the E model (think there might be a difference in the Intel chipset used to as the "e" is limited to 192Gb of RAM). Though the expansion options of this server would allow me to add whatever's needed further down the line (SAS would be lovely).
