So, having sent back the Asus TUF A17 (Ryzen 7 4800H / 1660ti) due to concerns that it was running too hot (although it now seems that was probably normal) I am struggling to find a replacement. I was thinking of the HP Omen 17 (RTX 2070 version costs £1699 with the Intel i9750H). The reviews I have seen say it is a solid choice which runs quieter / cooler than most.

Not sure if there is any point in paying an extra £100 for the i10750H processor. Probably not, right?

Also, £1700 feels like a lot of cash compared to the Asus which was £1249. The general build and screen quality of the Omen seems to be a cut above the Asus though. If the cooling was better and it wasn't as loud then that would be a big plus for me too...

Thoughts?

If I was going for 17'' and didn't really need much portability, I'd be ordering one of the pc specialist laptops as they are the clevo chassis with desktop graphics and processors in which stay cool.

Alternatively, I'd order the Eluktronics rp laptop. It's only around £1100 but the UK shipping is around £350.

You mean the magnesium alloy chassis?

I see the new 15" Omen is out at £1600 with an RTX2070 and i7-10750H, has anyone seen reviews, I have been searching and found nothing.

I am in the market for a new work / gaming laptop and was going for the Zephyrus G14 with RTX2060, but feels like its delayed and delayed and still no stock (or answer from OCUK even a "we don't know" would be nice), the Omen is in stock and ready to ship now. I did consider a Razer 15 but can't justify the premier price feels like I would be throwing money away for no reason as its £500 more than the Omen and has half the SSD space.

Yeah - actually being able to get the machine is a significant issue these days, which is why I started looking at the HP as well. I did have a machine on order from a company similar to PC Specialist but they are struggling to get the chassis.

I cant believe it, the G14 is now in stock for Monday delivery from elsewhere..... but now thinking about the extra power of the GTX 2070 over the 2060.

Portability is a big issue as I travel 60 - 75% of the year for work, some reviews of the HP 15 would be helpful.

The place I was going to order from use Clevo chassis too I think...are they pretty well designed for cooling then?

Yeah they are pretty big chassis with decent airflow so I wouldn't worry about temps.

For me personally, CPU temps below 95° and GPU temps below 85° at load are all I'm really looking for. Anything below that is a bonus. Those temps won't effect the longevity of the parts to any meaningful level, you'll have already replaced the laptop way before the CPU / GPU die.

I got the Omen 17, its a BEAST.

i7 9750h
16GB Ram - up to 64GB
RTX 2070 W/ 8GB - G Sync Compatible
17" 144Hz 1080P
Back light keyboard, 3 zones plus WSAD zone

1TB SATA drive standard plus 2 x solid state M.2 Slots (populated with 512GB)

I paid £1k for a barely used on 2nd hand, so happy to see the back of my old MSI Notebook

So the Omen 17 I was looking at has the 9750H CPU and the RTX2070 and the other system I had on order has the newer 10875H but the RTX2060. The Omen is slightly more expensive but not by much. All other things being pretty much equal, which of the two above configs would be better? 6 and half a dozen?

I would opt for the RTX 2070, the CPU is up-gradable anyway - if you can get hold of one from Intel you could pop in a 45W 9980HK into it and it would be even more of a beast.

Yeah, I'm nervous about the Omen because I've read a couple of reviews which say the fan noise is particularly bad and continuous. Maybe the newer ones are better.

Actually they use the Tongfang GM7MP0P...which I think is the same Magnesium Alloy one used in the PC Specialist Vyper series.

The lastest version of the Omen 17 does seem to get good reviews in terms of running cool.

like i said, its a beast of a laptop and can be got for circa 1k GBP if you look around, you need the newer models with a 9750h / RTX 2070 - When you look at how much competitors cost this is a bit of a bargain. The keyboard also is very good and responsive.

Edit... you also need to check it is G Sync compatible, i think some of the older ones were not.
