Hi guys,

Looking at a new laptop and I've come across the HP Omen 15 dc0022na which seems to be a pretty great spec for a great price.

i7 8750H (6 core)
16GB RAM
256GB SSD/1TB HD
GeForce 1070
15.6" 1080p 144Hz G-Sync display

Can get it for £1487 which to me seems like a ridiculously good deal. However I think this particular model is very new as I can't find much out about it. Does anyone have any input on these? I'm getting increasingly tempted.

Check out "Bob of all Trades" on you tube, he has recently done a very in depth review of the refreshed HP Omen 15 that you are looking at (thin bezels, 8th gen CPU).

Link here:

Also here is an impressions vid from another youtuber I like:

I don't think Dave Lee has done a review of it yet.

It is the GTX1060 versions that are reviewed so keep that in mind. Same chassis, but the screen is better with the version you are looking at. Overall impressions seem to be good, but with some concerns regarding temps.

Here is some impressions from Reddit users who have bought it already:

Personally, I can't decide between these or a Dell G5/G7 myself, waiting for the 1060/1050Ti versions to appear on the UK HP Store before I decide.

Thanks for that, some very useful stuff. Seems the people with the one I'm looking at, which has a 1070 Max-Q are reporting that it runs cooler, especially after a BIOS update so that's nice. I think I might just have to go for it. It's just a crazy amount of spec for £1487, or £1586 with 3 year warranty lumped in.

Interesting stuff, until you mentioned Max-Q, Max-Q 1070 performance is around that of a oc'd laptop 1060.

In a chassis that size that should be able to cool a standard 1070 with no issues.

If a model come with the standard 1070 at the RRP (£1,599) that's an absolute bargain with 144Hz IPS display.

I think it's Max-Q anyway, it doesn't specifically say to be fair. The page just says:
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 (8 GB GDDR5); Improved cooling; Upgrade access door; Full-size 4-zone lighting backlit keyboard with numeric keypad and NKRO; Faster 2x2 Wi-Fi®;Thunderbolt port
It is a bit quicker than a 1060 though, albeit not by a massive amount. Seems that a 1060 is around 15% slower than a 1070 Max-Q and a full 1070 is 15% faster, so it's in between.

I'm fairly sure it's got a full 1070, going by the above and https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c06047270

I'll see what happens when it arrives, can easily use that as a reason to send it back if it is a Max-Q I guess. But performance still seems to be pretty good.

It's definitely Max-Q. I have the laptop. Had it around a week. I've tried a ton of laptops around this price point and above - 1070 Max-Q, for me, is notably faster than GTX 1060 in real world. It's essentially the difference between running ultra and high setting at locked 60 fps in most modern AAA games. It also has G-gync, which none of it's competitors seems to have.

I'm slightly amazed at how good this is. Interested to hear others opinions though. Apart from the lid design I think HP finally nailed it.

That’s cool, thanks for the confirmation. As I mentioned it still seems to be a good performer and around 15% faster than a 1060 anyway so it’s not a bad thing.

I’m still amazed at how much spec you get for the money. Only downside I can see, Or upside depending on how you look at it, is it comes with 1x16GB stick so is running in single channel mode. Unfortunately with RAM prices as they are it’s around £150 for a second stick, but I’m not sure how much it’s actually hurting performance anyway.

Mine will be arriving today, looking forward to having a blast with it :)

Not had a chance to play any games on it yet but I like what I've seen so far. It's a decent size - was expecting it to be bulkier than it is and the screen is great. My only minor complaint so far would be that the return key is half size like on US keyboards and the backslash key is in the wrong place but I guess I'll get used to that eventually. Will get some games on there shortly.

I love mine. The bios update BoB mentions in his cooling video is now available in the UK. You can essentially now undervolt it in the bios, which is awesome. Have my cpu running at 35w and there is a small performance drop, but no more spikes in temp.

Just had a look for that in BIOS and I’ve set mine to 35w too. Will be interesting to see if there’s any performance differences but so far everything I’ve thrown at it has run nicely. I’m really quite impressed with this thing, even more so for the money.

Ok mine is suffering from tragic battery life. Getting around 2 to 2 and a half hours out of it just sat in Windows, using a bit of Remote Desktop and some web browsing. I could understand battery not being great for playing games but I'm hardly doing anything. Even after a full charge it's dropped 7% being in sleep mode for 4 hours and then a further 15% just sat on the Windows desktop. Unfortunately I don't think I can live with the battery being like that, but something must be wrong. I did a clean install of Windows when I first started using the laptop though so I have no idea what the problem could be.

So high refresh rate and g sync are the most likely culprits when it’s on. Have you tried knocking the refresh rate down to 60hz when you’re running on battery? Mine is also bad on battery, but they all are. Want features to make your game better? Your battery life will suck. It really depends on your use case I guess. I brought mine to game with, and that makes the battery sort of pointless... it’s going to be terrible no matter what and any battery “saver” features will hobble my experience - so I don’t use them. For me I either want something that’ll last all day for productivity (in which case, my iPad Pro is the best device I have by far) or game (which is crap without power). There isn’t anything which does both successfully. One interesting thing to check, I think the laptop has some battery saving feature that actually prevent it from charging to 100% all the time so you don’t ruin what little you have access to. Eg, in performance mode, mine tops out at 90% when plugged in, but will top up to 100 when I drop out of it. Anyway... looong rambling response. Sorry. Hungover.

  • Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Processor
  • RAM: 16 GB / Storage: 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB
  • Full HD display
Just bought this one from the highstreet store, Should be with me tomorrow. No where does it mention MaxQ or anything along those lines in the marketing. I'm guessing this is the standard version? Although for the price it looks great.

How are you guys getting on with yours?

It is a Max-Q though it doesn't seem to mention it anywhere. Really nice laptop, great spec, great price and it runs everything really well.

However the battery life wasn't good enough for me so I had to return it. I was hoping to have the best of both worlds with a machine capable of gaming and also capable of getting me through the day with my usual work stuff which doesn't involve anything particularly intensive, just web browsers and remote desktop sessions. I would barely make 3 hours with that which just wasn't good enough. If you're using it for its intended purpose which is of course gaming then it's going to spend most of its life plugged in anyway so no problem there.

Can you think of an alternative?

I haven't been able to find anything that compares to the HP for spec and price, not even close. There may be better ones for battery but I suspect all the gaming laptops will be a similar sort of thing.

I tried dropping to 60Hz and making sure Windows was set to max battery saving but I still got nowhere near the ~6 hours of mixed use the specs claim. Maybe it was just my usage or maybe it was because I was spending a lot of time using Chrome, I'm not sure. Even with nothing running though I could leave the laptop idling in Windows and while the screen was on, the battery would drop 1% every 2-3 minutes, again without me doing anything or having any apps open/running in the background.

Definitely try it out though, as battery is the only complaint I have with it and that may even have been something specific to mine rather than across the board. Everything else about it is excellent.

Cheers for your thoughts Phemo. For me 3 hours is OK for the battery, I'm sure Chrome would have added to that drain though, It is still my main browser but it is really heavy nowadays.

I received it yesterday, After a bit of de-cluttering(Compared to old HP machines there isn't a great deal of bloat, The main one being mcafee) & updating windows & such things I am all set up. The build quality is much better than I expected. It isn't too heavy certainly not as weighty as my old Alienware R14. I haven't noticed any light bleed as of yet from the screen which was one of my concerns.

It does get rather hot though! Even after the bios update doing a little bit of gaming saw it in the 80c+ range, Certainly not enough to put me off though.

For the price I couldn't see anything close to this laptop in terms of specs & I've been looking for a while now. Even in the adverts they don't mention the 144hz screen & gsync, so that was a lovely bonus too.

So from my initial impressions I am very surprised but satisfied I think.
