Hi.
Is anyone here well up on HP Procurve switches?
Reason being is that we're looking at buying 3 new Procurves, 1 main one, and 2 to function as general switches. And i dont really know a lot about switches tbh.

The main one thats been spec'ed by our suppliers is the 1800-24G, which looks pretty good, but the 2626's have been spec'ed for the other two, that for some reason, cost about £10-£20 more, but have worse specs compared to the 1800-24G.
The networks they will be functioning on has just over 250 computers on it, most of which are old machines, hence megabit, and we have a few gigabit machines as well.
I'd ideally like all our new network gear to be gigabit capible tbh, for future needs.

Anyone know much about Procurves?

Thanks in advance.
:)

We have quite a quantity of HP Procurve 2524's, all running the last firmware version and all have performed perfectly without fault since they were installed over a year ago.

With the exception of some of the major players such as Cisco and eXtreme, I would rate HP as one of the best as they provide stable yet cost effective solutions, also, they have a lifetime next day swap-out policy too iirc?

I agree with Axer, we have the 2524 switches in our rack and they are flawless for our needs of general desktop and mail connectivity. we also have some 2824s that have been really good for us too.

We've used the next day service which is really good when an electrician managed to blow 3 switches up. The one Cisco switch we have just seems over complicated for what it does but thats just me I'm not Cisco trained.

We have a 5308 chassis with 4 modules installed for our main rack and our edge switches are 2650's and 2524's. I must say its a rock solid network with those switches and well worth the money.

I havnt checked the prices of the 28xx series you have all recommended yet, i'll do that at work in the morning, but would the 1800-24G's be good enough to act as a 'main' switch, and as 'secondary' switches?

The 1800 isn't as manageable as the 25xx series and with the lack of serial port is was more of a faff to configure but apart from that it is fine (though has only been in for 6 months) We have a whole range of HP switches from the 5308 to the small 408s, all are rock solid and have lifetime warranties. Yes there are problems, mainly transceivers failing and rattling power supplies but call up the friendly dutch and its replaced then next day.

Shame procurve manager is a bit No swearing!

I would go for the 28xx series as the main and then the 1800 as secondaries, don't forget to add on the price for the mini-GBIC transceivers and fibre patch cables.
