How easy is it to setup two HP Procurve managed 2610 switches with GBIC modules is it just plug and play? whats involved to get it working otherwise?

Not sure about the managed switches, done it on a couple of 1800-24g's and it is so easy my mum could do it :D

If they're brand new then yep they'll just be plug and play. If they're used reset them to factory settings first.

Modern HP switches don't support non HP gbics. Also some early HP gbics, arn't supported on newer firmwares and newer switches.

Since you're using 2610s which are relatively new I doubt any of the above will apply.

EDIT: Also depending on how the patching is arranged it's possible to get the two cores the wrong way round, unlike cat5 they won't sort them selves out.

Really? No support at all, Cisco just loose DOM functionality with non cisco optics (same with most vendors). If they're actually don't support 3rd party optics (that is exactly the same optics without HP tax on them, they're all made by the same three companies anyway) then I'll be rethinking our of HP switches at all.
