i want to setup a home server and have seen the hp ml110 for about £180 new and whs for about £75 but don't know if it is suitable.what i want to know is if it would be better and cheaper than getting something like the hp mediasmart home server,i have 4x500gb wd green hard disks and want to stream to a media server.i have had a netgear stora which failed after 4 days and a buffalo linkstation live which was unsuitable.any help greatly appreciated

The little Mediasmart boxes are fairly decent IMO, small and quiet and pretty low power draw.

I've got one myself with 4x 1Tb drives it in and performance is pretty good (avg of about 85MB/sec write speeds).

WHS itself is also a nice solution if you have a couple of PC's in the house as the automatic backup just works - HP also make software for their that allows it to function as a target for Time Machine on a Mac.

I also have a couple ML110's that I use for an ESXi lab, noiser more power consumption but can fit a couple of extra drives in them.

the mediasmart is a bit out of my price range the new storageworks x510 starts at £440 with 1tb.would the ml110 be easy to setup with whs and would it be ok to stream videos to my media player

I'd go for Hp ml110, you can probably do a lot more with it. Although i've never used a NAS.

Got WHS running on a ML115 and its perfect. Pretty simple to setup, will be fine streaming videos.
