Hi All,

Just a quick question, we recently bought a HP DL380 G7, which came with one Intel Xeon X6560 processor, I want to add another one, but the company is quoting a price £200 highter than the retail price.

Can i buy the retail one and fit it into the server, or is their something special with it, which means I can only buy it from HP.

Thanks

I guess it is technically possible that HP might have locked down the BIOS to use only HP known serial numbers, but I doubt it.

However, buying retail will mean you don't have the HP mounting kit, the heatsink, the VRM (possibly), the fans (possibly) and the air channelling (again, possibly).

Have you factored that into the "extra" £200?

You'll need the HP heatsink most obviously which is specialised to the server.

Seriously though, for that kind of hardware £200 is nothing in the grand scheme, really want to risk invalidating the warranty for the sake of £200? Interesting choice.

Another issue we have is that's it going to take another 2 1/2 weeks before delievery because HP have none, and our not going into production with them until next week. Which means a lot of money sitting in the rack doing nothing for the next few weeks!

There is no X6560 CPU option for the DL380 G7, according to the latest available quickspecs from HP.

Do you mean this:

HP DL380 G7 Intel® Xeon® X5660 (2.80GHz/6-core/12MB/95W) Processor Kit

P/N: 587491-B21

You will need the HP option to a) not invalidate your warranty and b) get the machine specific heatsink

Yes, if the part code is for a Kit then it'll come with all the bits.

100% correct! The use of the word 'kit' plus the HP accessory suffix '-B21' indicates that it should have everything you need; CPU, Heatsink (with pre-applied thermal compound), VRM (if needed) and sometimes additional fans.

One place on google shopping that could be described as a intelligent container has 3 in stock so I'd hurry!
