Howdo server gurus,

I've found this server for sale (HP ProLiant ML110 G7 E3-1220) for £380 with £150 cashback, £230 for a quad core sandy bridge Xeon powered server? Yes please.

My only issue is, I require at least 8gb of RAM. It comes with 2gb, which isn't enough. Not enough in the slightest.

But, the RAM it comes with is ECC. I've never felt the need for ECC and it costs around 4 times as much as non-ECC RAM.

My plan was to get 16gb of cheapy 1333mhz DDR3 for £60 and stick it in there, but I can't find out if the server will support it or not. Any ideas? How much does 8gb/16gb of DDR3 cost?

TL;DR

Does the HP ProLiant ML110 G7 E3-1220 support non-ECC RAM? Google is not my friend.

Has to be ECC my friend. I had issues with my ML110 G7 (Intel G840 Processor) in that i incorrectly purchase non ECC ram resulting in the machine going into critical mode and not even booting up.

I tried to go into settings to see if i could disable the ECC function but to no avail. Im now running 2xKTH-PL313E/4G plus the original 2gb stick (10GB).

There's been a few discussions below that the machine can actually take 32gb opposed to the listed 16gb but i don't think anybody has actually tested it yet although i got an email from a company last week saying they had tested i with unbuffered ECC RAM up to 32gb.

ECC ram definitely works out dearer than ordinary but if you check around enough your get a decent deal. You can sometimes pick up stuff that has been returned and sold cheaper due to the original packaging being opened.

There is one chap running 24GB (2 x 4GB, 2 x 8GB Registered ECC) which would indicate that the chipset is happy with more than 16GB using the latest BIOS.
I can't find any official comments from HP on their spec pages, but it seems to be the case it can take 32GB.

As far as memory brands go, get Kingston. They're the only manufacturer (as far as I know) to test the modules post-assembly.
KTH-PL313E/8G and KTH-PL313E/4G are the part numbers you want. :)

Cheers guys but decided against it now. I have enough toys and in a year or two when I finish uni I'll look into it then, no doubt there will still be bare-bone servers for around this sort of price.

I'll stick a screen shot up later on the other thread, but I've now got an ML110 G7 running ESXi 5 with 32GB, using 4x Kingston KVR1333D3E9S modules.

I bet that can run some pretty hefty stuff...

I'm so very tempted by one, I really am, but I just can't afford it! Installing ESXi 5 on my current server now to play with, should keep me happy for a while. It's only got an E6300 1.8ghz dual core and 8gb of RAM but it manages OK. I guess we'll see how well when it's running multiple VMs though!
