I have an oldish Proliant ML570 at one of our clients. It currently has a Xeon MP 2.7GHz Prestonia Socket 604 CPU in it. As the client is complaining of the database running slowly etc I was going to drop another CPU of the same spec into it.

I have been told by someone that only certain CPUs will work in Proliant servers, not just any old Xeon 604 that is suitable.. Is that true?

I also can't seem to find another 2.7GHz Prestonia anywhere and they don't even exist on CPU-World! As they cost peanuts nowadays its probably going to be easier to buy two faster CPUs if they work..

Cheers,
Andy

Thats what I thought as well, thanks for confirming it though! There is no warranty left on the server anymore as its getting on a bit.. Just need to try and source me a 2.7GHz Xeon. Might just try and get two 3.0GHz ones instead though..

Damn, didn't realise it needed another VRM! Grr.. I'll have a look inside next time I'm on site and see if it needs one.

Ohh.. Nice link! Cheers for that! :) Am I right in thinking that if I drop another CPU in, I need to add memory to match that one? Or am I making things up..

Ta for the info.. We are going to stick an extra couple of gigs in it anyway, seems as we can get hold of the RAM we need for fairly cheap.

Managed to scrounge a couple Xeon 2.5GHz off the bay last night for about £25 including delivery. Am going to take out the existing 2.7 and just drop the two 2.5s in. Should see a bit of an improvement as it can handle twice the things at the same time, albeit slightly slower at processing them..
