Do people have a patch policy for hardware drivers and firmwares like they do for OS patching? Or do people generally just dont touch them once the are in and running without any issues, only updating occasionally or if there's a big revision of firmware offering new features?

Generally only do firmware if there is a specific issue, or if I log a call with HP as that's always the first thing they want to do :/

PSP very much the same.

Actually you should really regularly update your firmware (or keep it up to date along a baseline), particularly for things like c-class blades and the network interconnects and particularly if you're environment is quite dynamic (e.g. OS updates often, e.g. Linux point releases) and hardware gets upgraded, moved etc. However, you should make sure you talk to HP to work on a method here, since there is a "compatibility matrix" of sorts for these things.

Ensure you're on the advisories for your products, this will also determine what you do.

Same applies for firmware as it does for PSP.

Note - HP also looks to release a quarterly firmware and PSP bundle which they recommend is tracked.

Oh absolutely :p but it's worth building a process from the ground up. Not so hard for most organisations that have the test platforms available to roll in procedures for standard maintanence. In typical fashion we found its either the big organisations with Byzantine processes or the the small businesses (who don't have much, or any, spare test kit) which this can be tricky for. Consequently though, they did suffer.

As with most product updates, we tend to try to stay within a couple of months of the latest release, unless there are particular issues which need to be addressed. Maintenance weekends (every 2-3 months) provide the best opportunity for the firmware/driver updates.

The HP Version Control Repository on a System Insight Manager server is particularly useful when using software baselines for tracking and comparing what driver/agent/firmware versions are installed.
