HP vs Dell

Been looking on getting a new server for a charity and have been eyeing the HP Microserver which I can get for £250, £150 with cashback but I've heard that Dell are doing some good offers at the moment.

The server will be used for 2003 R2 to run a windows app, mysql, apache with several VHosts system in the first degree and a small NAS drive in the second. Is the processor in the Microserver powerful enough? Currently the SqlDB weighs in at slightly over 100Meg and has around 20 users connected to it concurrently (may be more later). It will be web facing and I anticipate around 1000 active connections max. The app itself is very efficient in itself, but with Symantec suite and backup exec clients running in the background.

Would the Microserver with 4GB ram be able to handle it effectively? Also is there any special deals on Dell which compete with the Microserver?

Thanks in advance. << Love the XMAS smilies

What is their current server? As you can maybe tell if it'll work ok if you compare new with old. Running different apps with databases, then dual core microserver might let you down.

Currently they are using a very expensive leased box at £933 / yr over 5 years now. The hardware has been slightly improved over the years but currently it is quad core (lowest Intel model from when it was two dual core proc's stapled together), 3GB ram, 160GB HD w/ RAID 1 2x1TB.

I know technology has moved on since then - not really tried new server processors so not sure about performance.

The CPU in the microserver lacks power. The existing server has at least 3x the speed.

Have a look at an HP ML110 G7 or Dell T110 II.
With 4 hour response support, only having 1 CPU would be fine.

Going for something with dual CPUs will run at £1000+ for the base unit, but of course that may still be cheaper than what they're paying now.
