HPI Check

Looking for a bit of advice here. I'm interested in buying a car which is slightly below book value and I've run an HPI check on the car.

There is one point of note which I need some answers to if possible. Why does the mileage suddenly go back to 7000 on 5 July 2012 :confused:

The car is a 2006 Mitsubishi Colt if that helps.

Also, should I be concerned that there are no records before 2011?

I think it's fairly clear that the July 2012 figure is simply a mistake - what with the next figure getting back on track.

Seems odd there is nothing before December 2011, mind.

Certainly looks like a mistake. I'd be very wary though, strange ther6's nothing before 12/2011 as fox has said. Get the VIN and Reg and see if any Mitsubishi dealer will run a SH check?

I wouldn't be worried about info not being available for before 2011, HPI mileage data relies on NMR which on the whole the data is rubbish! It's voluntary information provided when the car has changed hands etc.

Certainly looks like an error for 2012 info someone has written 7000 miles on yellow slip or V5 when car was sold, mileage data provided by HPI can not be used in a court of law due to its inaccuracies.

I would make a judgement based in MOT info and service info, maybe ring the dealers if you really dispute the mileage.

It probably isn't anything to worry about but as above give mitsubishi a call and ask them to confirm its history with you. Most dealer service departments are happy to help with this sort of thing.

Check the MOT history - you'll need either the V5 document reference or the most recent MOT certificate number but a trader should be happy to give these to a serious buyer.

NMR data isn't great, they don't seem to perform any sanity checking - I've seen instances where 999999 has been entered as a mileage by Kwik Fit and ended up on their database.
