I have a new setup arriving Wednesday and am debating whether or not to bother with XP.

I've been using Windows 2000 for ages and like the way it's not patronising and that I can get it down to about 100MB memory usage for gaming. Conversely, I've used XP at work over the past few years and despise it. It seems like bloatware IMO.

Is there any point in getting XP Pro for my new setup (E6300,2G Ram etc etc) or will I see any benefit in gaming by using XP?

Cheers

The old "XP is bloatware" argument never really held water with me from the start, and especially not now. It tended to come from those who's PC wasn't even half the spec required to run XP when it arrived.

The install of XP can now be customized in such a way (using nLite) that you can remove anything you deem to be unnecessary and get it's running footprint down as much as you want.

You 'could' stay with 2000, but I personally see absolutely no reason not to be on XP now. Especially if you will be running a top spec rig, as even with non-essential services running, the machine should mince it's way through anything on the market right now anyway.

I guess I just resent the amount of unnecessary stuff being lumped in (what with being an old school 8 bit maniac and also a unix bod) :)

I'm just hoping to find out whether there is any performance gain or other benefit which justifies splashing out the cash on XP Pro really. If there's no real difference with 2000 and XP then I'll carry on with 2000 and Litestep for prettiness :)

EDIT: Also, I presume W2K Pro will have no issues with the C2D setup?

Stick with 2000 then buy Vista in a couple weeks. Pointless buying XP now as it's going to be old hat very soon.

Good point... can't believe I didn't think of that! :D

Cheers ears!

If your 2000 license is an OEM one then you can't reuse it anyway and have no choice but to buy a new license, whether it be 2000, XP or Vista ;)

Like NathanE said, wait to get a licence for Vista, then you'll be able to use 2000, XP or Vista should you choose.
