Hi all,

I'm now posting from my new rig but am a bit confused by the realtemp readings on idle. Should there be so much of a disparity between temperatures on each core?

I'm a bit loath to reseat the HSF again, especially since this is with all fans on minimum...

Yep, perfectly normal. Ive seen higher differences on various quads, including one i had.

Cheers.... Sorry for the stupid question but as my build thread shows, I'm *really* out of touch these days!

The disparity seems to decrease under load actually so I'm feeling a bit better.... only a difference of 3 or 4 degrees running PRIME. :D I'll leave it running a few hours but it seems to be topping out at 42* which I presume is OK for a stock i5 2500K on air.

Stability tests to run then hopefully some overclocking. :)

Thanks!

3-4c at load is fine, as is 42c, (what cooler btw). Ive owned four intel quads, and all have had differences between cores, (10c on a q9550). Ive only seen one screenshot of an intel quad with perfectly even cores.

Cheers. This is a Thermalright Silver Arrow in an NZXT Phantom. Installed by an out-of-touch noob as well, so quite happy! :p

EDIT: Fans on high running Prime95 and SuperPi now at 37 max... jeebus, my old rig is like a furnace in comparison. :(

Cracking cooler the sa, probably the best air cooler you can buy.

Yep... the lowest temp core is bugging me though, I'd like to get them all down that low. Maybe the TIM didn't spread properly to one corner or something. It's just way too much hassle to try fixing now anyways, I think I've had enough of messing about after yesterday when I managed to mount the thing the wrong way round. :/

The SA was definitely a great shout by you fine chaps in here. :D Really appreciate it, even if I did have a bit of a shock when I opened the box...!

If you can get them a bit closer i wanna know how mate.:) The ihs on the cpu's arent totally flat, nor are the cooler bases. I had a q6600 and a thermalright ultra extreme, even after sanding both totally flat. There was still a difference of 6c between cores, it loaded at 68-62-68-62, 3.8ghz under prime load. Below is a shot of my 920 at idle.

I was considering an sa my self, (prolimatech super mega at the min), should fit now that i changed from ocz reaper ram. That or watercool the cpu.

I was tempted to try the lapping trick but was way too nervous, having never done it before. Also this is a retail chip so I'd rather not invalidate the warranty (I'm assuming that having all the details scrubbed off would do this).

I did make sure I had a few goes with the Akasa thermal surface purifier before I mounted it, because the chip looked like the guy in the factory used it to wipe the grease off his spotty face...

Lol at the spotty face remark,:D id avoid lapping a new cpu, i only done it on my q6600 as id had it a while, and wanted to see how far it would clock. It does invalidate the warranty. The temps you have are grand, now get her oc'd mate.:)

Thanks for clearing that up (the lapping thing, not the spotty face). :D

A few hours more stress testing and I'll be pestering all you fine chaps that frequent the overclocking section. ;)

No probs mate, lapping, yes no bother. But spotty faces, ill leave that one to the experts at clearasil.:D Lots of people on here with similair setups, so you should be able to glean some good advice. Happy clocking.:)
