HSBC Debit card limit

Unless explicitly stated when you are given your card/account that there is a limit, there usually isn't one. That said, if you're making unusually large payments/amount of big payments, they might put a security block on your card.

Thanks, thought it might be that, I'm trying to buy car insurance and wanted to make sure.

Buy it anyway, the worst that will happen is HSBC will give you a call to make sure it's a valid purchase if it's outside the norm of your usual spending habits.

The only limit might be the number of cardholder not present transactions that can be made in a single day before the card is blocked for suspected fraud.

I know Barclays does have this kind of system in place, but I'm not to sure if HSBC does so you might want to check with them so that if they do then you won't get caught out in the future if you have several orders charged from different online shops on the same day.

The only hard limit on debit cards is normally just the amount of cash you can withdraw in one day which is usually around £250

I've never come across any limits for online shopping, although the most I've ever spent in one go was £350.

That'll be why then. If you're generally only spending up to £1k per transaction and then that trend suddenly jumps to you spending £20k on first class air travel for the family, the bank will be checking that.

I've done £1350 over the phone on a HSBC debit card before if that's of any help.

EDIT: I did of course have the money in my account before using it!

i would also suggest using a credit card with a sensible limit on it as you're spending the bank's money. If any fraud occurs, it's still the bank's money.
If fraud occurs on your debit card it's your money they're spending and it might take a while to get it back.
You can pay the credit card off in full when the bill comes through or earlier if you have the money there and then.

didnt have any bother recently buying a multiple £1000 car (in person), doing £200 insurance over the phone, then going online and buying about £300 worth of accessories across several stores all in the space of 48 hours.

It is for car insurance, I'm going to give them a call today and see what they say. The biggest purchase I have made is £340 and the insurance is £707 so it might flag up. I would have paid it on my credit card but that currently doesn't have enough credit left on it.

Do you usually make large purchases? I don't which is my I fear that they might automatically block it.

Lloyds are murder for stopping my card. I'm forever phoning them up after having a transaction declined. Happened only last week when I paid my Microsoft office subscription. Just because the transaction is listed as being in a different country.
