Does anyone know what you need to take with you when you want to withdraw a large amount from HSBC? Trying to buy a car and need to withdraw close to £10k and the amount of messing around I've had to do with A+L I've just moved it over to HSBC instead.

Saw somewhere on a few threads in 2009 from other forums that you need your cheque book - probably not seen that for a good few years now! The indian call centre I spoke to a few days ago didn't mention this at all.

Anyone know how easy it is?

10k in cash? wouldnt it be safer to do a bank transfer?

For anything more than 1k i think you'll need to phone the branch so they can get the money in. I think you'd need photo ID as well.

You usually have to give notice, as most accounts have an over the counter limit on them (often £500 per day +£300 via ATM). Some smaller branches may want to order in the extra cash for you. Ring your branch and ask?

You may have to give them notice of your intent to withdraw that much money at once, i would call the branch to make sure. You could also ask them what form of ID etc you need as they would be much better informed than the foreign call centres. HTH

Edit - Ginger stepchild etc etc.

Spoke to the indian guys on the HSBC call centre as mentioned a few days ago and they said that amount should be no problem at the branch I want. I agree the bank transfer would have been fair enough but the guy wants the dosh (I have met him a few times and he seems legit as they come). I don't know if the guy feels there would be risks with a bank transfer obviously having to give the keys to me when I'm there and similarly if I waited for it to transfer I may never get the car etc....

well ive been having work done to my house and will only pay the trades that are doing the work when im happy with stuff plus they dont **** off half way through when you keep danggling the money . First time i went to draw 1.5k out and wouldnt let me because i had no cheque book . Had to order 1 only took 2 days to come. But drawing 10k out cash is daft get a bankers cheque from hsbc for 10k .:)

None of this is true, if you don't know why say anything?

I took 4k from a branch, no id, no call first. they didn't even have an envelope for me to put it in.

10k i would call and as you said probably use a bank transfer, but 1k.

I may give it another shot due to me having had the money since Thursday and all this dicking about is causing even more delays...

Think a bank transfer it would need to be immediate though as I'll be travelling around 150 miles to get the car so it would either have to be in his account by the time I arrive or I'd have to trust that I'd get it when it's moved to him which could take days that unfortunately I don't have with my holiday from work over after Tuesday!

Can't you drive him to a local branch of your bank and do a transfer there and then, over the counter? Just tell him you're not comfortable with walking about with 10k on you.

id do this

or pay over the counter at his own bank into his accont. it will show up on any online banking or cash machine instantly. when ive dont this at lloyds it has gone in before ive even left the door so im sure it would be the same with other banks

Think I might actually see if he will go to the local HSBC and set it up with telephone banking beforehand to withdraw it there and then - hopefully that will work.

I might see what bank he is with as a second option but I know the fast payment system is anything but at times and some banks even though they send fast they cannot receive etc etc causing more ballache. Might just see if I can do the first option :)

I took out 6.5K and they were a bit snotty about it and asked me to give them some notice next time. They don't keep that much at the counter in most branches and if they are a branch with low staff they have to leave the front counter unmanned while they go get the cash out the safe.

Also ask them if they can give it to you in one of their meeting rooms rather than at the counter. It takes a while to count that much and a lot of people will be able to see how much you're getting, and the counter staff can be way too blatant about it. Don't trust anyone these days. Good advice is to get someone to go with you. Even if they wait outside it'll make you feel better.

I hate it when I get asked for a CHEQUE BOOK as a form of ID in the rare occasions I need to withdraw at the counter. Driving Licence with Photo, Passport.....nono I want to see your Cheque Book.

I do not own a cheque book.
