I've setup an htaccess file to limit access to a specific folder and its pages within.

This seems to be working however if I enter the password in wrong it jumps to a server error screen, then any further attempts to access the pages result it going straight to the server error page instead of displaying the username / password screen.

Anyone have any ideas ? or is this going to be something with my hosting?

Is it a 500 error or a 403 error? It might be that you just need to set a proper 403, or if it's a 500 you're getting it'll most likely be a problem with the syntax in someway. Generally speaking the cause of the error will be logged in your Apache error log so if you check there it will tell you a lot more about the problem.
