Just got my early upgrade and i have gone from an old HTC Hero to a awesome Desire HD

Now a few questions

I received the phone with half a charge and gave the battery a fully charge before first use. I used the phone LOADS the first day (wifi,dl apps, playing games etc. and from 11 am > 10pm it was dead and time to charge (as i would expect from a day of heavy use)

I have given the phone a complete charge over night and awoke to the green light. This morning as i was getting ready for work the misses took it off charge to play some angry birds (women ..) and i used it a bit for texts and web before driving to work (about 5 mins max) and when i got into work (about a 15 min drive it had already depleted 1 bar....

Now i know the batteries on these phones are not brilliant and ive done all the usuall things i did on my Hero (advance task killer set to kill apps on screen off, changed brightness, screen time out to 30 seconds, wifi and mob net off unless i use them, no syncing unless i ask it to etc etc.) And I am wondering if there is anything I can do (without rooting) to help save a bit more power.

Ive read about conditioning the battery (seen vids on youtube etc) and wondered if this is something i should do?

Does the battery get better after a few charges?

And is ATK a false positive and actually use more battery then it helps save?

(sorry for the silly questions I just want to make sure I can decide whether to keep this phone or sent it back before my 7 days grace period is up ...)

Any help is appreciated thanks

My battery got a lot better after around a week of charging it every night. I haven't done any optimising of the battery, stopped using ATK and it sits around 40% after a day at work.

Power saver @ 30%
Screen to Auto brightness
Wi-Fi on and connected when at home/work
Push Exchange Sync
FB at 30mins
Gmail at 1 hour
Every other sync turned off
Non-rooted.
30-50 texts per day
5-10 phone calls
Light gaming/browsing

Charge it for a bit when i get in from work, then it's good to go until the morning if i'm out all night.

Can't knock it really considering how much i use it.

Get an app called current widget. It displays the current going through your battery. Your battery is fully charged when the charge reads 0. Despite this, the phone will turn green up to an hour before hand.

Don't use task killers, Android since 2.2 handles it on its own, and automatically starts apps if you kill them with the task killer which actually uses more battery.

If you have a rogue app thats using lots of CPU, the HTC Sense account is notorious for this sometimes, then just stop using that app.

Your battery will settle down after a few weeks and for me with medium use I get around a day and a half.

Heavy use will kill it though, I used the satnav yesterday without a car charger and drained the battery in two hours.

this is interesting to know, I'm shocked that ATK could kill the battery quicker? I have noticed the likes of I player etc constantly restarting.

Why (everywhere I read) is it rated so highly for android devices ... ?

I might give it a little test with and without and see the difference for myself (not that I don't believe you :D ) I have had mine on since this morning and its only lost the one bar as mentioned in the OP. Although I have only really been texting and that's it.

Biffa is right, never use a task killer. There's just no point. Instead just restart your phone at least once per day and you should be fine :)

Task killers simply drain more battery by using more CPU by running all the time. Android has a very good memory management system, it can handle all the task killing itself.

If you feel confident, get a custom ROM (with custom kernal), and get SetCPU to turn down the CPU when the phone screen is off, phone is not being used much etc.
