Hey,

Following on from my earlier thread, I've decided it may be beneficial to drop some money to get a better phone to last me through the next contract and most of Uni.

So, atm with orange I can get both of these for the discounted price of £69.99 + my £15 per month contract.

Main uses would be music, browsing net, it would also double as my camera (mine broke :(), texting (I do a lot, will reduce shortly though :o) and general phone use (seeing as both are Android I feel Angry Birds will get a fair bit of game time).

Which would be the best option? Read both reviews on gsmarena and the Galaxy is the best for music quality, but the HTC beats it on camera quality.

Any thoughts appreciated, thanks,
Cookeh

The Galaxy S wins (for me, having owned them both) at everything except software, Sense > TouchWiz, and the strange omission of an LED flash.

I really didn't like the Desire HD camera, in general use many of the shots aren't great.

Ah, thanks.

You're around here a lot! :p

Are they equally customizable?

Don't suppose you could give me a run down of the pros and cons associated with both?

Brief rundown of stand out points for both then -

Desire HD -

Bigger screen, better for reading text on, poor viewing angles if that matters
Just got a 2.3 Gingerbread update which is nice
Feels decent quality, but the bottom cover is a bit tacky
Camera is average, but usually ok
Battery is poor, but you will probably get a day out of it fine if you are careful with what you have syncing, etc.
Annoyingly quiet loudspeaker
HTC Sense software (Android skin) is quite a lot better than the Samsung equivalent

Galaxy S -

Smaller, SuperLED screen, superb colours and solid blacks, video etc looks great, great viewing angles
Better HD video recording, slightly better camera
Better battery life
Higher quality audio due to a better DAC
Build quality feels a bit cheaper but it is well built and very light
No LED flash is a bit odd
TouchWiz isn't as good as HTC Sense UI
Has more onboard memory and an SD card slot
Looks like an iPhone 3GS :(

I've probably missed lots of things out :p

Having used both and owning one (and used a friend's GS alongside my DHD today), the DHD is the better phone, and most would agree. However, the GS does have a better DAC (note that it is still a phone!), and the battery life will be better as it uses an AMOLED display (though I still stand by my personal opinion that they are truly awful).

Customisability, the same really, provided you don't like Sense. On either phone, run CM7 and customise that and it'll be lovely on either device :) TouchWiz is terrible though, so on the GS, you'll probably want to get rid of it.

For texting and surfing, the DHD display would be far better (my usage is similar to yours) IMO. Pop instore and have a look is all I can suggest; the two phones are more similar than you'd expect.

Been browsing through the Show Us Your Background Thread, so it's unlikely I'd keep eitehr SenseUI or TouchWiz for long now that I've seen what can be done :)

Sounds like a good idea, re seeing each in store, just need to find a way of getting into town at some time xD

Why do you think AMOLED displays are 'awful'?

Just my opinion. I hate the oversaturation, that's all. I can appreciate why some prefer it though, and of course it is a godsend for battery life. But if the OP likes natural colours, nobody can deny that steering well clear of AMOLEDs is the best you can do. If you aren't bothered, then it is the way to go merely because of battery life IMO.

SGS2 has gone a step further to allow colour tone control which helps.

I've seen one, and thankfully, it is far better. Still nowhere near what I would consider acceptable, but at least if I was given one to use for a day or two, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Hopefully in the future things will be far better :) Tone controls sound like it could get you closer to what it should be :)

I have both with me and the SGS is the winner (but have moved on to the Atrix). It all depends on your phone requirements. For me, the SGS display wins it and the 4" screen hits the spot. Also the addition of the front cam is a must for me since my family lives away and im one of the few people who actually uses video calls :)
